‘Dazed and Confused’ Lawsuit Settled by Jimmy Page

Renowned guitarist Jimmy Page has successfully reached a settlement regarding a legal dispute related to Led Zeppelin's iconic track “Dazed and Confused.” This lawsuit was initiated in May by songwriter Jake Holmes, who claimed rights over the song.

Holmes’ legal action targeted both Page and the Sony Pictures film studio, asserting allegations of copyright infringement and breach of contract. The lawsuit contended that two early live performances of the song were included in the upcoming 2025 documentary Becoming Led Zeppelin without properly crediting or compensating Holmes for his original work.

Furthermore, it was alleged that Page had released multiple live versions of “Dazed and Confused” as performed by the Yardbirds, attributing sole songwriting credits to himself. These versions are featured on various archival releases, including Yardbirds ’68, Live at the BBC Revisited, and The Yardbirds: The Ultimate Live at the BBC.

The lawsuit alleged that Holmes claimed Page and Sony Pictures “willfully infringed the Holmes composition by falsely claiming that the Holmes composition is the Page composition by purporting to license use in the film of the Holmes composition as if it was the Page composition, and by collecting license fees for use of the Holmes composition in the film.”

While specific details regarding the settlement have not been disclosed, reports from Reuters indicate that the involved parties have informed a California court that they have resolved the dispute, and a final written settlement is in progress.

Representatives from Warner Music and Holmes’ attorney, Daniel Johnson, both opted not to make any comments regarding this ongoing matter.

Previous Legal Action by Jake Holmes Against Jimmy Page

This is not the first instance of Jake Holmes taking legal action against Jimmy Page. In 2010, Holmes filed his initial lawsuit, which was settled out of court. This earlier lawsuit compelled Page to amend the credits for Led Zeppelin to read “Jimmy Page, inspired by Jake Holmes.” Holmes had previously opened for the Yardbirds in 1967, where he claims that Page first encountered his original version of “Dazed and Confused.”
