DC Superhero Series in Development by HBO Max and David Jenkins

The comedic pirate television series Our Flag Means Death may have concluded after just two seasons on the HBO Max streaming platform, but the network’s enthusiasm for collaborating with series creator David Jenkins remains strong. According to a report by Deadline, HBO Max has engaged Jenkins to craft the pilot episode for a new series centered around the DC Comics superhero Booster Gold. Should the project receive a formal series order, Jenkins is anticipated to take on the role of showrunner. Following a remarkable day of Emmy nominations for The Penguin, which garnered an impressive 24 nominations, Booster Gold stands poised to become one of Warner Bros. Discovery’s most significant DC Comics television adaptations.

The development of the Booster Gold series was initially announced by DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran as part of Chapter One of the DC Universe, titled Gods and Monsters, back in January 2023. However, the path to production has encountered some challenges, including the departure of a previous showrunner. With David Jenkins now at the helm, there is optimism that he can help push the project forward. The official launch of the DC Universe began with the premiere of the animated series Creature Commandos in December. This was followed by the release of Superman, the inaugural film in this expansive universe. Additionally, the much-anticipated second season of Peacemaker is set to debut in August and is included as part of the DCU. Upcoming projects also feature the film Supergirl, which will hit theaters in June 2026, alongside Clayface, slated for a September 2026 release, and the HBO series Lanterns.

If you’re curious about the character of Booster Gold, Deadline provides an insightful overview: “Created by Dan Jurgens, the character’s real name is Michael Jon ‘Booster’ Carter. He is a member of the Justice League, originally hailing from Gotham City and was a university student on a football scholarship. Unfortunately, he was expelled due to gambling issues and subsequently took on the role of a superhero, while continuing to annoy people with his relentless pursuit of fame and wealth. His nickname was bestowed upon him by Ronald Reagan after he saved the former President of the United States.” Gunn and Safran have indicated that in the upcoming TV adaptation, the character would “utilize basic technology from the future to masquerade as a superhero in the present.” While there have been whispers about Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals) being considered for the role of Booster, the project has not yet entered the casting phase.
