Def Leppard Album Comparison: ‘Pyromania’ vs. ‘Hysteria’

Which is the superior Def Leppard album — Pyromania or Hysteria? This week on the Loudwire Nights radio show, we’re experiencing a bit of Def Leppard fever, so we’ve matched up not only two of Def Leppard’s most significant albums but also the biggest albums in the rock scene for our Chuck’s Fight Club matchup.

This matchup begins in 1983 when Def Leppard released their third studio album. Pyromania was the album that truly catapulted them into commercial success, partly due to its three breakout singles — “Photograph,” “Rock of Ages,” and “Foolin’.” However, the album contained much more depth, with fan favorites like “Too Late for Love,” “Rock! Rock! ‘Til You Drop,” “Stagefright,” and “Billy’s Got a Gun.” The album peaked at No. 2 and achieved Diamond-certified sales status in the U.S.

Fast forward to 1987, after a few years of uncertainty following drummer Rick Allen’s loss of his left arm in an auto accident. Despite this setback, Def Leppard returned stronger than ever with Hysteria, an album that produced seven major singles including hits like “Animal,” “Pour Some Sugar On Me,” “Love Bites,” and “Hysteria.” This 12-track album was a no-skip sensation that peaked at No. 1 and also reached Diamond-certified sales status in the U.S.

As with all Chuck’s Fight Club battles, Loudwire Nights host Chuck Armstrong will introduce the matchup during the 8 PM hour of Monday’s show. Individual arguments will be presented for both albums on Tuesday and Wednesday while you continue to rank each one. On Friday, votes will be counted, and the higher-ranked record will be showcased in a Loudwire Nights rock block during the 8 PM hour.
