Devil’s Mouth marks the exciting new project directed by Jeff Wadlow, renowned for his previous work on Kick-Ass 2 and Imaginary. The screenplay for Devil’s Mouth has been crafted by talented writers Aja Gabel and MJ Wesner. It gained recognition on the prestigious 2019 Black List, which showcases the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. Initially titled Apex, the plot description reads: “When old college friends on a trip to Mexico get trapped in an underwater cave system with a bull shark, old tensions and power struggles resurface as they fight to survive.” Recent updates reveal that the setting has shifted from Mexico to the exotic landscapes of Thailand, enhancing the film’s appeal with its unique backdrop.
Jeff Wadlow has made significant strides in the horror genre, having received a DGA Award nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Television and Commercials for his work on the reboot of the family-friendly horror series Are You Afraid of the Dark?. He directed four episodes in its second season, showcasing his ability to blend horror with engaging storytelling. His partnership with Blumhouse has led to various successful films, starting with the 2018 horror flick Truth or Dare. This collaboration even led to a chilling remake of the classic Fantasy Island series and the recent film Imaginary, where a seemingly innocent stuffed bear turned out to be more sinister than expected. Notably, Devil’s Mouth is a co-production involving Amazon MGM Studios and Lionsgate, promising high production values. Wadlow’s directorial portfolio also includes 2005’s Cry Wolf and Netflix’s The Curse of Bridge Hollow, along with experience writing for Bates Motel and The Strain. He has even been considered for directing the upcoming DCU film Clayface.
Regarding the cast of Devil’s Mouth, Kathryn Newton has made a name for herself with notable television performances in Smallville, Halt and Catch Fire, and Big Little Lies. Her film credits include portraying Cassie Lang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and starring in Zelda Williams’ upcoming film Lisa Frankenstein. Newton is also set to appear in the sequel Ready or Not: Here I Come. Co-star Lana Condor, known for her role as Jubilee in X-Men: Apocalypse and leading the popular To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy, will also see her much-anticipated film Coyote vs. Acme released in 2026, which adds to her growing filmography.
