Director Update and Story Details for Clayface in DCU Movie

Exciting new developments regarding the Clayface movie have emerged, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter?s Heat Vision newsletter, shedding light on the ongoing search for a director and providing insights into the film’s intriguing storyline.

Latest News on the Clayface Movie: Director Search and Storyline Insights

In the most recent newsletter issue, industry insiders Aaron Couch and Borys Kit clarify that Jeff Wadlow, who was previously mentioned as a potential director by Deadline, is not connected to the project in any capacity. However, it seems that James Watkins is in discussions with DC, and there were considerations last year for J.A. Bayona (known for Society of the Snow) to take the helm of this intriguing film.

Regarding the film’s writing, the talented Mike Flanagan, recognized for his work on multiple acclaimed projects, is unable to direct due to prior commitments. He is currently engaged in developing the Carrie TV series and is also focused on the highly anticipated reboot of The Exorcist, which has garnered significant attention.

The Hollywood Reporter also provided tantalizing hints about the storyline for this upcoming film. As previously discussed, Clayface is set to be a horror-themed cinematic experience. The script draws from the character’s origins as a “B-movie actor” who resorts to injecting himself with a substance to maintain his fame, ultimately discovering that he can transform his face and body, becoming a literal embodiment of clay.

Key Details About DC?s Clayface Movie: Genre, Writer, and Universe

At this point, specific details about the movie remain sparse, but discussions surrounding potential directors reinforce the notion that the film will delve into horror-thriller elements. The script is being crafted by the highly regarded writer and filmmaker Mike Flanagan, known for his mastery in the horror genre.

On social media platform Threads, James Gunn has labeled Clayface as a ?DCU story,? indicating its place within the broader continuity of Gunn and Peter Safran’s newly established shared DC universe, which has recently kicked off with the animated series Creature Commandos.

While no formal casting announcements have been made regarding the Clayface movie, it is noteworthy that Alan Tudyk is voicing the character in Creature Commandos. Gunn has indicated that actors who lend their voices to significant animated characters in DCU projects are likely to reprise their roles in live-action adaptations. This is exemplified by Frank Grillo, who voices Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos and is also set to appear in the live-action Superman movie scheduled for release in 2025.

Furthermore, Gunn has confirmed that Tudyk will portray a live-action character within the DCU. Initially, it was unclear which role he would assume, as Tudyk also lends his voice to Doctor Phosphorus and Will Magnus, alongside Clayface in Creature Commandos.
