Disney’s $1 Billion Live-Action Star Updates on Sequel Script

The live-action Lilo & Stitch sequel from Disney is progressing behind the scenes. Following reports confirming that a live-action sequel is in development with franchise co-creator Chris Sanders set to write the script last year, one of the film’s stars has expressed his eagerness to return if everything aligns. During the Sundance Film Festival, Billy Magnussen spoke with Collider’s Steve Weintraub while promoting The Audacity, and the actor shared his enthusiasm for potentially reprising his role as Pleakley. Although Magnussen clarified that he doesn’t have official details or a formal offer, he indicated that the project is actively being developed, and that he’s “praying” for the call.

Magnussen also reflected on why the movie resonates with him beyond being a Disney project, highlighting the emotional core that has allowed the franchise to endure. He mentioned that he is always drawn to stories centered around heart, which he believes is at the core of Lilo & Stitch.

They’re “Trying to Create a Script” for the Sequel

When Weintraub mentioned the sequel, Magnussen responded with enthusiasm:

“Yeah, Lilo & Stitch! I hope so. That little girl, that whole family… And again, with Zach Galifianakis in that. That’s where we met. He’s a great guy.”

When asked if Disney has approached him about returning, Magnussen stated that he hasn’t been officially contacted yet, but it seems like the creative process is underway. “I hope. I think they’re trying to create a script. So, hopefully. I’m praying,” he said. Magnussen also emphasized why he is eager to return to the franchise, framing it as something larger than just a “kids’ movie.” “Again, I’ll always do a kids’ film. I shouldn’t say ‘kids’ film.’ I’ll say a family film, where it’s heart,” Magnussen expressed. “I love doing projects that have heart.”
