Disney+’s Western Remake of Cult Classic Dominates Streaming

It’s funny how certain characters just refuse to fade out. Decades pass, entire genres fall in and out of favor, audiences shift, attention spans shrink — yet somehow, a lone cowboy who first rode onto the page in 1946 is suddenly back in the global spotlight, and not in a nostalgic, “remember this?” kind of way either.

Disney+’s Lucky Luke has quietly, almost stubbornly, worked its way into the platform’s worldwide Top 10, sitting comfortably among far flashier titles, and doing it with a tone that feels just a little out of step with what streaming usually rewards right now. The only problem is that if you’re in the U.S., you can’t actually watch it yet, which, depending on your level of curiosity, either makes it easy to ignore or wildly frustrating.

‘Lucky Luke’ is a Classic Cowboy Story That Knows Exactly What It’s Doing

For almost 80 years, Lucky Luke has been following the same wandering gunslinger through the Old West of America, who has been notoriously known for being “faster than his shadow” to the point of being dismissed as a ridiculous character until you see how truly effortless this show makes that statement come to life. This particular version of Lucky Luke (Alban Lenoir) has a little more of a heaviness to him than what you’ve likely seen of him as a caricature; however, he has still retained his edge and remains utterly capable, but going forward, you can feel that he understands the mythos surrounding him, and he seems a little fatigued by it. This creates tension in the story and gives it a solid foundation, so it isn’t purely comedic.

He forms a partnership with Louise (Billie Blain), a young woman searching for her mother, and brings Luke into a much more elaborate plot than anything he would ever try; he also ends up involving Louise in what is, ultimately, part of the country’s foundation. While this larger conspiracy connecting Luke and Louise’s search for Louise’s mom may sound implausible, the way they ground themselves in the story helps keep it real. The show has not forgotten that it is primarily about Luke; therefore, they remain committed to telling a Western story with all the traditional properties of a Western: dusty roads, small towns, crooked men who think they’re smarter than they are, and a gunman getting into a dangerous situation because someone has to.

Show Do You Belong In?

Yellowstone · Landman · Tulsa King · Mayor of Kingstown

Four worlds. All of them brutal, complicated, and built on power, loyalty, and the price of survival. Taylor Sheridan doesn’t write heroes — he writes people who do what they have to do and live with the cost. Ten questions will reveal which one of his worlds you were made for.

Yellowstone

Landman

Tulsa King

Mayor of Kingstown

01

Where does your power come from?

In Sheridan’s world, everyone has leverage. The question is what kind.

02

Who do you put first, no matter what?

Loyalty in Sheridan’s universe is always absolute — and always costly.

03

Someone crosses a line. How do you respond?

Every Sheridan protagonist has a line. What matters is what happens after it’s crossed.

04

Where do you feel most in your element?

Sheridan’s worlds are as much about place as they are about people.

05

How do you feel about operating in the grey?

Nobody in a Sheridan show has clean hands. The question is how they carry the dirt.
