DJ Envy and his wife, Gia Casey, faced a parent’s worst nightmare this month when their young daughter experienced a seizure. Gia shared the frightening details of discovering Peyton after the medical incident just two weeks before Christmas. Celebrity friends, including Tyrese and Kelly Rowland, expressed their love and support in the comments of her Instagram post.

Gia Casey Discusses What Led to Peyton’s Seizure

Mrs. Casey revealed the shocking news on Christmas Day, stating in her caption that this holiday “looks very different” for their family this year. She explained that their world “completely stopped” when the reality of potentially losing one of their children hit them. Gia and DJ Envy—whose real name is Raashaun Casey—are parents to six children, with Peyton being the youngest. The couple has been together since high school and has been married for over twenty years.

In her Instagram post, Gia mentioned that Peyton was battling both the flu and strep throat simultaneously. Additionally, the child had been experiencing a high fever for “several days.” However, visits to Peyton’s pediatrician and urgent care resulted in the same advice: Gia and DJ Envy didn’t need to be overly concerned. According to the post, they were informed that the flu tends to be more aggressive in winter and can last between seven and eight days.

Gia Casey shared that Peyton’s illness kept her awake for six nights, while her instincts indicated that “something was wrong.” After several nights of monitoring Peyton, checking her temperature, ensuring she stayed hydrated, and administering medicine, one night took a turn for the worse.

“One night, at midnight, I looked over and noticed her body immediately stiffen, her eyes opened and she was strangely looking up and off to the left. Her arms were extended, and her hands were in a prayer position. I thought that she was having a bad dream. I tried to wake her up, but it became obvious that it was not a dream. I sat her up, shook her and repeatedly tapped her face. Nothing changed. She was completely zoned out and only making slight movements. It was at that moment that my heart sunk and I experienced fear that gutted me… Peyton was having a seizure. It was the absolute worst moment of my life…”

Peyton Is Hospitalized Following Her Health Incident

Gia Casey stated in her IG post that she drove 105 mph to get Peyton to the hospital in eight minutes. Doctors performed a spinal tap, CT scan, and an MRI; however, by the next morning, Peyton’s condition had deteriorated. Her eyes swelled “like golf balls,” and after “many days and many tests,” doctors determined that she had suffered from a severe sinus infection. The infection had “infiltrated her orbital areas and the epidural fluid around her brain.”

Initially, doctors informed the parents that Peyton would require brain surgery; however, that changed. “Thankfully, that was not the case,” Gia wrote, adding that their daughter underwent two other surgeries instead. Consequently, their family’s Christmas celebration became more focused on togetherness than ever before.

[Peyton] had to have two surgeries in her sinus areas to drain the infiltration. We just got home a few days ago after 10 days in the hospital and Peyton is recuperating. Praise God!!! So this Christmas, please hold your family close. This could have ended differently. We are celebrating life. We are grateful. We are together. #TheCaseyCrew”
