A powerful transformation for one of the MCU’s flagship characters may soon grace the big screen. Avengers: Doomsday is confirmed to bring back Thor, marking the God of Thunder’s tenth appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The second teaser for Avengers: Doomsday did not reveal much about Thor’s role in the upcoming conflict with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, but it showcased a significant internal struggle for the hero, who is depicted anxiously praying to Odin for a chance to “defeat one more enemy.”
Thor’s prayers hint at a potential connection to a major transformation that the character undergoes in Marvel Comics, suggesting that Thor might receive exactly what he desires, possibly just in time for the Avengers’ final confrontation with Doctor Doom in the Phase 6 film.
Avengers: Doomsday May Be Hinting At The MCU’s Take On Rune King Thor
The Avengers: Doomsday trailer presents a more desperate version of Thor than we are used to seeing, with the character pleading with Odin’s spirit to assist him for his daughter, Love. Thor requests the “strength of the all-Fathers” and expresses his deep desire to continue raising her.
Thor’s request brings back discussions about the possibility of introducing Rune King Thor into the MCU. Introduced in 2004, Rune King Thor is a power-up that the Avenger received during the “Avengers Disassembled” storyline. To gain the power necessary to stop Ragnarok, Thor hung himself on the magical tree known as Yggdrasil.
This heroic sacrifice allowed Thor to acquire the Odinforce, the power source wielded by Asgardian kings. Consequently, Thor was resurrected, enabling him to return and aid the Avengers in their final battle as Rune King Thor.
Thor’s mention of having something worth fighting for that he never had before could lead him on a similar emotional journey in Avengers: Doomsday. If his aim truly is to obtain “strength of the All-Fathers,” then Rune King Thor may indeed be the direction this movie is heading for the God of Thunder.
Even Doctor Doom Can’t Beat Rune King Thor
An upgrade for Thor in Avengers: Doomsday would spell trouble for its villain, given that Rune King Thor possesses a power level that surpasses most Marvel characters, including Odin himself. Doctor Doom, formidable as he may be, does not compare to Rune King Thor.
Not only does Rune King Thor possess greater physical strength than all other versions of Thor, but he also has reality-warping abilities similar to those of Scarlet Witch, which allowed him to erase Mangog – the being destined to cause Ragnarok – with just a thought. Therefore, unless Avengers: Doomsday reveals Doom’s “God Emperor Doom” form, Rune King Thor’s debut in the MCU would likely lead the Avengers to victory.
