Keith David recently provided an exciting update regarding his anticipated role in the upcoming Community movie, igniting discussions about his participation in this beloved franchise.
During an interview with ComingSoon, while promoting his voice-over performance in the animated feature Sneaks, David was asked to clarify a previous statement he made on social media, where he indicated that he had not yet been approached about a role in the film.
In a thrilling turn of events, David revealed that he has received confirmation about his involvement in the Community movie, stating that he will indeed have a role whenever production officially begins.
“I’ve been informed that once the movie finally gets the green light for production, I’ll be welcomed to join the cast at the celebration. As of now, that hasn’t happened yet. I understand that it will occur eventually, and when it does, we’ll see what unfolds,” David explained. “However, I have never claimed that I wouldn’t participate in the project.”
In the beloved sitcom, David portrays Elroy Patashnik, a former scientist turned inventor who heads the I.T. department at Greendale Community College. His character has become a fan favorite, adding depth and humor to the series.
In 2022, Peacock officially announced its commitment to producing a Community movie, with the screenplay penned by Dan Harmon and Andrew Guest. The film aims to reunite the main cast, featuring talents like Joel McHale as Jeff Winger, Danny Pudi as Abed Nadir, Gillian Jacobs as Britta Perry, Alison Brie as Annie Edison, Yvette Nicole Brown as Shirley Bennett, Donald Glover as Troy Barnes, Jim Rash as Craig Pelton, and Ken Jeong as Ben Chang. Notably, Chevy Chase is confirmed not to be part of the film.
Production for the Community movie faced delays in 2023 due to the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which impacted many projects in Hollywood. Initially, cast members expressed optimism that filming would commence in 2024, but as of now, no official production has started.
While specific plot details remain largely confidential, Glover shared with The Hollywood Reporter in February 2024 that the storyline will revolve around a “college reunion,” featuring Abed, who has grown into a “big director” working on his magnum opus.
Although the Community movie does not yet have a confirmed release date, fans can currently enjoy all six seasons of Community, which are available for streaming on Peacock.
