- Comparison: Ponies has a current score of 95%, surpassing Game of Thrones‘s 89% overall score.

- Future Potential: If renewed, Ponies could expand its fanbase and improve its standing compared to Game of Thrones.
Emilia Clarke may have a new best series, according to the current Rotten Tomatoes scores for Ponies and Game of Thrones. The latter is the star’s career-defining TV show, in which she plays the iconic Queen Daenerys Targaryen. Now, Clarke is starring alongside Haley Lu Richardson in the Peacock spy thriller, following two widows in 1970s Moscow who become CIA operatives.
Ponies debuted to a stellar Rotten Tomatoes score of 88%, which has since climbed to 95%. All eight episodes of Ponies season 1 dropped on January 15. This is Clarke’s second TV role since the end of Game of Thrones in 2019; her first was the 2023 MCU installment Secret Invasion, which was disliked by audiences and critics alike.
Per Rotten Tomatoes, Ponies is now Emilia Clarke’s highest-rated show overall, overtaking Game of Thrones, which has an overall series score of 89%. Notably, the massive fanbase of Game of Thrones means that it is still (presently) a bigger audience hit, as it has a Popcornmeter score of 85%, against Ponies’ Popcornmeter of 70%, suggesting a narrower appeal.
Also to be noted is how Game of Thrones’ infamous last season affected its series score. When the show was at its height, it was, quantitatively, better than Ponies. Games of Thrones season 2 has a 97%, season 3 has a 96%, and season 4 has a 97%. With the exception of season 8 (55%), the other seasons all have a score of 90% or higher. Ponies, of course, only has the one season to date.
Should Ponies be renewed for a second season, it will have the chance to prove itself as a consistently good series and grow its fanbase to offer a more substantial comparison to Game of Thrones (though it probably won’t reach the enduring global phenomenon status of the fantasy epic). Despite its flaws, Game of Thrones is still considered one of the most influential and best TV shows ever made.
Ponies also represents a comeback for Emilia Clarke, who hasn’t had any major, critically successful projects since Game of Thrones. Her last TV series, as mentioned, was a flop, while her movie career since 2019 has included Last Christmas, The Pod Generation, and The Twits. But her new project is now the highest-rated of her career, less likely to drag down her individual performance.
Clarke’s Ponies co-star Haley Lu Richardson is known for the likes of Five Feet Apart and The White Lotus. Both stars could become synonymous with Ponies in the years to come, depending on where the show goes from here.
