Emily Blunt’s Action Movie Reunion Tops U.S. Streaming Charts

Emily Blunt‘s new action movie, reuniting her with a star from a $200 million Disney film flop, is officially Number 1 in the US on streaming. Blunt’s movies vary across genres, from co-starring with her husband, John Krasinski, in A Quiet Place, to her role as Katherine Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer in 2023.

Her most recent notable role, however, was as Dawn Staples in The Smashing Machine. Directed by Benny Safdie, the biopic stars Dwayne Johnson as MMA fighter Mark Kerr, focusing on his career and influence over the sport. The movie reunited Blunt and Johnson following the Disney adventure movie Jungle Cruise, a $200 million production that flopped at the box office.

Luckily, The Smashing Machine is finding success on streaming just three months after its theatrical release. The sports action biopic is currently sitting at Number 1 on HBO Max in the United States, putting it ahead of award-winning 2025 movies like Sinners, One Battle After Another, and Weapons. It’s also a far cry from the box office performance of the production.

The Smashing Machine, which also saw Blunt reunite with Safdie after Oppenheimer, was not a financial success. The biopic only earned $21 million against a $50 million budget, despite having the pull of its lead stars. However, The Smashing Machine reviews were generally positive, scoring a Certified Fresh 70% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Audiences were also satisfied with the movie, which currently sits at a 74% with them on the site. The film’s performance on streaming is another indicator of its popularity, with a larger number of people tuning in for it than some of the best movies of 2025. Even though it didn’t do well theatrically, the film has clearly struck a chord with audiences at home.

The movie may not be one of the best sports biopics of all time, but it does examine Mark Kerr’s career and how it shaped MMA fighting over decades. Blunt’s character acts as a core supporting force for him, with Mark and Dawn’s love story being a core element of how the movie plays out.

Although The Smashing Machine wasn’t a hit when it was in theaters, its streaming success on HBO Max emphasizes how there’s still an audience for the movie. While it means the Johnson and Blunt-led film earned its recognition after the fact, it also still makes it successful, even if it’s at home.
