This revelation emerged during a recent Q&A session at the 2025 Locarno Film Festival, where the 66-year-old acclaimed actress shared her experience of being pursued by former President Donald Trump in the 1990s, shortly after her divorce from Kenneth Branagh.
During the engaging event, Emma reminisced about her time working on the 1998 film Primary Colors. While she was in her trailer one day, she received an unexpected phone call that would lead to a surprising story.

Initially, she thought it was merely a prank and responded, ‘How can I assist you? Perhaps he was lost and needed directions from someone familiar with the area.’
“Then, he proposed, ‘I’d love for you to visit one of my stunning properties. Maybe we could enjoy dinner together,’” she continued, mimicking Trump’s distinctive voice. “I replied, ‘That’s incredibly kind of you. Thank you for the invitation. I’ll get back to you soon.’”
At first, Emma expressed her bewilderment about why the 79-year-old President would reach out to her or how he had obtained her trailer phone number. However, it didn’t take long for her to piece everything together.
“I soon realized that my divorce decree had just been finalized that day,” Emma explained. “I suspect he had people seeking out eligible individuals he could present to the public. A lovely divorcee, that’s exactly what he was on the lookout for. Somehow, he managed to get my number from my trailer. I mean, that’s quite an invasion of privacy—stalking, really.”
Emma was married to Kenneth Branagh, who is now 64, from 1989 until their separation in 1995. Coincidentally, Trump was also going through a separation from his second wife, Marla Maples, around the same period.
“It’s amusing to think I could have gone on a date with Donald Trump, and then I would have quite the story to share,” the Love Actually star remarked. “Who knows? I might have altered the trajectory of American history.”
