Empowering Experience at The Plus Strut Event

On May 3rd, I experienced the incredible opportunity to participate in The 2025 Plus Strut Walk/Run (powered by Ulla Popken), an extraordinary 5K event in the U.S. specifically crafted for plus size women. The atmosphere was absolutely electric, creating a vibrant community that celebrated inclusivity and body positivity.

Hosted in the beautiful city of Atlanta, The Plus Strut was not merely a fitness event; it evolved into a joyous celebration of body confidence, community spirit, and the remarkable essence of Black girl magic. As walkers and runners began to assemble, an overwhelming sense of energy enveloped the area. The sound of laughter, the rhythm of music, the high-fives exchanged among strangers who quickly became friends, and a collective heartbeat of encouragement resonated through every mile we traversed together.

Regardless of whether participants were sprinting or strolling, finishing first or last, every individual was honored, celebrated, and deemed a winner. It was a heartwarming reminder that every participant’s journey mattered equally, emphasizing the importance of community and support.

The Plus Strut: A Transformative Movement for Body Positivity

The Plus Strut transcends the traditional concept of a walk/run; it represents a powerful reclaiming of space within the wellness industry that has historically overlooked curvy and plus size women. Dressed in vibrant leggings, playful tutus, glittering sneakers, and radiating joy, we made a statement. It didn’t matter whether you were walking, jogging, dancing, or strutting with your friends; what truly counted was your presence. You were there, unapologetically claiming your space and uplifting others in the process, fostering an environment of acceptance and empowerment.

Witnessing first-timers crossing the finish line, tears of joy glistening in their eyes, was a beautiful sight to behold. Seasoned Strutters led chants filled with empowerment, while enthusiastic volunteers cheered on every single participant. The DJ played uplifting tunes that kept spirits soaring, and the vendors offered fabulous finds from wellness brands that contributed to my post-strut glow-up. The entire experience was a delightful fusion of fitness and joy, highlighting the importance of community engagement.

Embracing Sisterhood Through Every Step

What resonated deeply with me was the overwhelming sense of camaraderie that permeated the event. Every participant shared a common goal, embracing the mantra of “no queen left behind.” Women paused mid-stride to offer encouragement to those needing a little extra love, and shouts of “Yasss Queen!” echoed through the trees. This event transcended mere performance; it focused on presence and honoring our bodies in their entirety, just as they are.

This encapsulates the essence of The Plus Strut: it centers plus size women in a wellness arena that not only acknowledges us but also celebrates our existence with radical joy and intentionality.

The Importance of Events Like The Plus Strut

As a publication dedicated to plus size representation, our mission is to highlight those advocating for inclusivity in both fashion and media. Participating in The Plus Strut reaffirmed the significance of our work. Visibility is crucial. Safe spaces are essential. Most importantly, community is vital.
