Ozzy Osbourne, the iconic frontman of Black Sabbath, is taking significant steps to ensure he is in peak physical condition as he prepares for what is being heralded as the band’s final performance on July 5 in Villa Park, Birmingham, England. At the age of 76, after enduring numerous health challenges, he is dedicated to delivering an unforgettable show for fans, emphasizing the importance of his wellbeing in this monumental moment for rock music.
In a recent interview with Billy Morrison on SiriusXM’s Ozzy’s Boneyard channel, Osbourne shared insights into his rigorous training regimen in preparation for the concert. This highly anticipated show marks a historic reunion with his fellow band members, and it will feature an impressive lineup including Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Pantera, Lamb of God, Mastodon, and Alice in Chains, among others, making it a must-see event for heavy metal enthusiasts.
Reflecting on his journey, Osbourne remarked, “I haven’t performed in nearly seven years, and after enduring extensive surgeries, it feels like I’m starting from square one.” His struggles with a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis, coupled with a fall in 2019 that worsened a pre-existing spinal injury, have required multiple surgical interventions. Despite these challenges, he is determined to reclaim his place on stage.
To rebuild his stamina after such a long hiatus from performing, Osbourne has incorporated endurance training into his daily routine. He explained, “The first thing to decline when you’re inactive is your stamina. To combat this, I’m doing two sets of three-minute walks along with weight training. It may seem trivial, but after being confined to my bed recovering from numerous surgeries, every minute counts.” His commitment to fitness is a crucial part of his comeback.
Osbourne’s long-time collaborator, guitarist Zakk Wylde, has hinted at an exciting spectacle planned for the performance. Wylde teased that Osbourne might utilize a throne that will elevate him above the audience during the show, adding a dramatic flair to the event. He elaborated, “With Ozzy and his flying throne, which can even spray water, it’s bound to be an unforgettable experience. If he enjoys this performance, who knows? He might feel inspired to tour again.”
Wylde further expressed his excitement, recalling a moment when he heard Osbourne singing “Mama, I’m Coming Home” at a rehearsal. “It sounded incredible. We’re hoping this performance will reignite Ozzy’s passion for touring, leading him to say, ‘Let’s hit the road again!’” The prospect of more tours excites fans and adds to the anticipation surrounding this final show.
The upcoming concert will be directed musically by Tom Morello, the renowned guitarist from Rage Against the Machine. This event signifies Osbourne’s first live appearance since a brief performance during the NFL Kickoff in Los Angeles in 2022, with his last full concert occurring in December 2018 at the Forum in Los Angeles as part of his No More Tours 2 campaign. Other notable acts scheduled to perform include Halestorm, Gojira, and surprise appearances from Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins, Duff McKagan and Slash from Guns N’ Roses, Wolfgang Van Halen, Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit, Lzzy Hale, David Draiman from Disturbed, Jonathan Davis from Korn, Sammy Hagar, and many more esteemed musicians.
