Erin Moriarty Reveals Graves’ Disease Diagnosis

Understanding Emilia Clarke’s Battle with a Life-Threatening Brain Aneurysm

Emilia Clarke, renowned for her iconic role in Game of Thrones, faced a harrowing health crisis that she bravely shared with the public in 2019. In a poignant essay published in The New Yorker titled “A Battle for My Life,” she revealed the terrifying moment she was struck by a debilitating headache while exercising at the gym. She vividly recounted, “I reached the toilet, sank to my knees, and proceeded to be violently, voluminously ill.” The actress described the pain as “shooting, stabbing, constricting pain,” which led her to the gut-wrenching realization that something was seriously wrong with her brain.

Upon arriving at the hospital for a crucial brain scan, the diagnosis came swiftly and with chilling gravity: she suffered from a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a severe and life-threatening type of stroke caused by bleeding into the space surrounding the brain. Clarke explained, “I’d had an aneurysm, an arterial rupture,” highlighting the urgency and severity of her condition. This revelation marked the beginning of a challenging journey filled with uncertainty and fear.

Emilia underwent immediate surgery to seal the aneurysm, a procedure that she described as “unbearable.” During her recovery, she experienced aphasia, a condition that affected her speech, leaving her “muttering nonsense.” This period was not just a physical battle but also a mental one, as she grappled with the implications of her health crisis and the impact it had on her life and career.

Fortunately, a week later, she reported that “the aphasia passed,” and after a month-long hospital stay, she was finally able to return home. However, her health struggles were far from over. During a follow-up brain scan in 2013, she learned that a growth in her brain had doubled in size, necessitating further surgery. She recounted the traumatic experience, saying, “When they woke me, I was screaming in pain.” The second procedure had failed, resulting in a massive bleed, and the doctors made it clear that her survival was contingent on another operation, this time requiring them to access her brain through her skull in a more invasive manner.
