After a lengthy wait, the highly anticipated production of Euphoria season 3 has officially commenced earlier this year. Sydney Sweeney has hinted that this upcoming season promises to be the most “unhinged” installment yet, raising excitement among fans and critics alike.
In a recent conversation with Empire, Sweeney shared her thoughts on stepping back into the role of Cassie Howard after a three-year hiatus. “Cassie holds a special place in my heart; she’s someone I cherish deeply.” Sweeney expressed. “She’s a complex character, filled with flaws and makes a multitude of mistakes, yet everything she does comes from a place of love. Even if that love is tinged with sadness, it’s incredibly rewarding to portray a character as wild as she is. Working with Sam [Levinson] is a fantastic experience because I often find myself reading a script and thinking, ‘Let’s push the boundaries even further,’ to which he enthusiastically responds, ‘I’m all in.’ This season is truly unhinged.”
Although Sydney Sweeney had a decade-long acting career prior to her breakthrough role in Euphoria, it is Cassie that truly propelled her into the spotlight. “This role has undeniably transformed my life. The level of exposure and interaction through social media has significantly increased, especially regarding the character of Cassie,” she noted. “There’s a struggle for people to differentiate between an actor and the characters they portray. Cassie is a particularly divisive figure; she garners both love and hate, which makes her a deeply intricate character. I understand why this might create confusion among viewers. If people are criticizing my character’s choices, then I must be effectively embodying her essence.”
While many details about the new season remain under wraps, it has been confirmed that a significant time jump will occur, transitioning the characters beyond their high school experiences. Zendaya commented on this development late last year, stating, “The time jump is crucial because there’s a limit to how much high school drama can be explored. For instance, ‘And then she cheats on her boyfriend again!’”
She elaborated, “I’m not fully privy to the specifics of the plot, but I am aware that a time jump is indeed happening. It will be fascinating to see how these characters evolve outside of the high school environment and how the experiences from their formative years shape their adult lives in a much broader context. I’m equally curious to see how everything unfolds.” The eagerly awaited third season of Euphoria is set to premiere next year.
Sydney Sweeney has an array of exciting projects lined up, including Echo Valley alongside Julianne Moore, scheduled to debut on Apple TV+ on June 13. She also stars with Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar in Paul Feig’s The Housemaid, which is slated for theatrical release on December 25.
