F1/Days of Thunder Crossover Movie by Joseph Kosinski

Following their iconic collaboration in Interview with the Vampire, Brad Pitt is eager to reunite with Tom Cruise—as long as he doesn’t have to dangle from the side of a plane again. Director Joseph Kosinski believes he has discovered the ideal project that could bring them back together: an exciting crossover featuring characters from Days of Thunder and the thrilling world of Formula 1.

In a recent conversation with GQ, Kosinski was queried about his vision for a film starring both Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. He shared, “Currently, it would center around Cole Trickle, the character portrayed by Cruise in Days of Thunder. We would learn that he and Sonny Hayes share a complex history.” Kosinski elaborated, “They were once fierce rivals, perhaps even crossed paths in their racing journeys. I’ve heard tales of an epic go-kart duel between Brad and Tom during the filming of Interview with a Vampire, and who wouldn’t want to witness those two legends face off on the racetrack?”

This is indeed a captivating concept. Cruise has shown interest in a sequel to Days of Thunder, which makes the idea of returning to the racetrack alongside Pitt all the more feasible. While it’s true that different studios are involved, one can always dream about such a cinematic reunion.

The official synopsis for F1 reads: “Known as ‘the greatest that never was,’ Sonny Hayes (played by Brad Pitt) was the most promising talent in FORMULA 1 during the 1990s, but an unfortunate accident on the track nearly derailed his career. Fast forward thirty years, and he has become a wandering racer-for-hire when he is approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (portrayed by Javier Bardem), who owns a struggling FORMULA 1 team on the brink of collapse. Ruben persuades Sonny to make a comeback to FORMULA 1 for one final chance at redemption, racing alongside Joshua Pearce (played by Damson Idris), the team’s ambitious rookie determined to carve out his own legacy. However, as the engines roar to life, Sonny’s past resurfaces, revealing that in FORMULA 1, your teammate can become your fiercest competitor—and the path to redemption is one that cannot be traveled alone.

Our very own Chris Bumbray was impressed with F1, stating that the film “may very well stand as one of the most breathtaking examples of cinematic spectacle we’ve seen on the big screen in recent years.” He further commented, “While some may dismiss the film for its familiar narrative arc, it’s undeniable that F1 delivers an exhilarating ride, and—similar to Sinners—it reaffirms the significance of theaters in showcasing a specific type of filmmaking. One can only hope this film receives the blockbuster success it rightfully merits.” You can read the full review here.

What are your thoughts on Kosinski’s idea for a film that merges Days of Thunder and F1?
