Less than one month remains until Prime Video brings Fallout fans back to the wasteland for Season 2 of its smash-hit video game adaptation. In anticipation of the journey to New Vegas in the heart of the Mojave, subscribers are now rushing back to catch up on the first season that set the world on fire and helped propel Walton Goggins into superstardom after years of solid work on the small screen. The series has soared back up to ninth place on the platform’s global television charts, falling just behind La Ley del Corazón and Harlan Coben’s Lazarus, which premiered last month. In the United States alone, however, it ranks even higher at third, with only The Mighty Nein and Hazbin Hotel outpacing it.
Released last April, Fallout Season 1 introduced Goggins to the world of the Bethesda and Interplay Entertainment game franchise as The Ghoul, an irradiated, noseless, and ruthless bounty hunter who’s been living in the wasteland for over 200 years after the bombs dropped. Once known as Hollywood star Cooper Howard, he became a cynical killer just trying to survive and, naturally, gets involved in the hunt for Siggi Wilzig (Michael Emerson) to claim the bounty on his head. His journey sets him on a collision course with the other main players in the wasteland, including the naive vault dweller Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell), who’s searching for her kidnapped father, and the hapless aspiring Brotherhood of Steel knight Maximus (Aaron Moten). Each has their reasons for wanting Wilzig and the technology he carries, taking them all on a violent, crazy journey through the wasteland that ultimately lands them all in the same place — the Griffith Observatory.
Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet spearheaded the series to overwhelming success, becoming only the second Prime Video program to cross the 100 million viewer mark and coupling that with a Certified Fresh 93% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s since been hailed as one of the best video game adaptations to date, with a supporting cast that also prominently features Kyle MacLachlan, Moisés Arias, and Xelia Mendes-Jones, all of whom will also return in Season 2. The success has fed back into the games, too, spurring more viewers to check out the titles that inspired the show and leading to crossovers that have brought The Ghoul into the MMORPG Fallout 76 and all three survivors into the mobile game Fallout Shelter. This year’s iteration of Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights also recreated some of the most iconic moments and sets for fans to explore for real in a special crossover attraction.
