Having recently surpassed the coveted $1 billion mark at the global box office, director James Cameron‘s Avatar: Fire and Ash now aims to come within a respectable distance of its two predecessors. The film defied skeptics and mixed reviews to reach the $1 billion milestone, and while it’s still far from the massive earnings of the first and second films, it has surpassed several past hits such as The Dark Knight, Oppenheimer, and even Joker. With nearly $1.1 billion at the global box office so far, Avatar 3 has doubled the global box office earnings of The Meg, Jason Statham‘s quirky sci-fi blockbuster from 2018.
Based on a series of novels by Steve Alten, The Meg was directed by Jon Turteltaub and was one of Hollywood’s most successful attempts to attract the Chinese audience. This was a common practice in the 2010s when the Chinese theatrical market was rapidly expanding. In 2018 alone, films such as Aquaman, Avengers: Infinity War, and Venom broke box office records in China. However, over the last five years, Chinese audiences have gradually shifted away from Hollywood films, until this year’s blockbuster performances of Zootopia 2 and Avatar 3. Produced on a reported budget of up to $178 million, The Meg grossed over $500 million globally, with $145 million from domestic theaters and $153 million from China. A sequel, titled Meg 2: The Trench, grossed nearly $400 million worldwide a few years ago.
‘Avatar 3’ Is One of the Most Expensive Films Ever Made
The Meg received mixed reviews and currently holds a 47% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “The Meg sets audiences up for a good old-fashioned B-movie creature feature but lacks the genre thrills — or the cheesy bite — to make it worth diving in.” In comparison, Avatar 3 holds a 66% score on RT — the lowest of the series. The first film, Avatar, remains the highest-grossing film in global box office history, with $2.9 billion in earnings and an 80% score on RT; Avatar: The Way of Water is the third-largest film of all time, with a $2.3 billion lifetime global box office total and a 76% RT score. Avatar 3 was produced on a reported budget of $400 million, aiming to become Cameron’s fourth consecutive film to surpass the $2 billion mark.
