In a surprising turn of events, the iconic rock band Foreigner has announced that they will not be retiring as previously stated in 2022. This decision comes after a pivotal moment within the band, leading to renewed enthusiasm for their future.

In an exclusive interview with Billboard, bassist Jeff Pilson revealed that the discovery of a new lead singer from their own ranks has been instrumental in their decision to continue performing. “There’s just a lot of forward movement, and the band is incredibly excited,” Pilson expressed. “What initially began as a farewell tour has transformed into a new chapter for us, marking Kelly’s last tour and paving the way for our future endeavors.”

The current lead singer, Kelly Hansen, played a significant role in this transition. Initially, the farewell tour was motivated by Hansen’s wish to conclude his tenure on a high note while dedicating more time to his family. “This catalog of songs is extremely challenging for a rock tenor vocalist like myself to sing,” he elaborated. “I never imagined that I would be performing these tracks in their original keys at this stage of my life, and I’m uncertain how much longer I can deliver them at the level required.”

During the interview, Pilson shared insights about the band’s dynamics, saying, “Luis really had no intention of this,” referring to their new lead singer. “He was attempting to persuade Kelly to remain. However, when it became evident that Kelly truly wanted to embrace a new lifestyle, Luis stepped up, and his incredible voice emerged beautifully.”

Having joined Foreigner in 2004, Pilson is the longest-serving touring member of the band. He noted that founding guitarist and band leader Mick Jones, who is currently taking time off the road following a recent diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, fully supports the band’s decision to continue touring and recording new music.

Moreover, founding lead singer Lou Gramm, who has been making special guest appearances at recent concerts, has also committed to supporting the band in any capacity he can. “The shift we’re experiencing, with Luis stepping in, along with Mick and Lou’s endorsement, has fostered a more cohesive organization, and it has been an incredibly positive development,” Pilson remarked.
