This long-awaited move signifies the band’s commitment to sharing their artistic journey with a broader audience, allowing both old fans and new listeners to experience their powerful performances.

After spending an impressive 14 years as a digital archive hosted on the Dischord Records website, Fugazi is excited to announce the commencement of uploading their live recordings onto their Bandcamp page. This significant launch is scheduled for Friday, May 2, coinciding with Bandcamp Friday, and will feature two remarkable recordings that bookend the band’s illustrious career. These include their very first show at D.C.’s Wilson Center on September 3, 1987, and their poignant final performance in London on November 2, 2002. This initiative aims to make these treasured performances available for all to enjoy.

Subsequent shows will be uploaded on a monthly basis, ensuring that fans will have ongoing access to a treasure trove of live performances. Additionally, the band’s extensive online archives will also remain available, preserving their rich history for both long-time followers and new fans to explore and appreciate.

Founded in 1986, Fugazi emerged from the vibrant D.C. hardcore and punk scene, consisting of influential members such as Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat and Guy Picciotto of Rites of Spring. Throughout their career, spanning from 1990 to 2001, the band released six studio albums, often shunning the trappings of commercial success. While they achieved moderate chart success in the U.K., their highest position in the U.S. came in 1995 when their fourth album, Red Medicine, peaked at No. 126 on the Billboard 200. Their approach to music was more about artistic integrity than chart dominance.

The group’s live performances were undeniably one of their most captivating aspects, characterized by their DIY punk ethos. This resulted in Fugazi playing over 1,000 shows across 16 years, with ticket prices intentionally kept as low as possible—often around $5—ensuring that their music remained accessible to a diverse audience. In 2004, the band took a significant step by making their extensive live archives publicly accessible, beginning the release of the Fugazi Live Series recordings as physical CDs for their fans. “We liked this idea of, ‘Let’s just let it be everything,’” Picciotto shared with the New York Times in 2011. “There doesn’t have to be the idea that this is the great, golden document.
