Gerard Butler fans were recently treated to some exciting news with the arrival of the first Greenland: Migration trailer, which shows the action hero return to his signature role as John Garrity. However, one year before he starred in Ric Roman Waugh’s disaster film, he played arguably his most famous character for the final time in a beloved action thriller that’s finally back on streaming. In 2019, Butler starred alongside Morgan Freeman in Angel Has Fallen, the third franchise installment that puts Mike Banning on his toes when he’s accused of assassinating the President. After previously being absent from streaming, Angel Has Fallen was quietly added to Netflix in America over the weekend.
Angel Has Fallen was panned by critics upon release, which led to it holding a Rotten 38% from reviewers on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. However, the film hit home with fans, who reviewed it with a Verified Hot 93% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. It even found financial success by grossing 6 million at the global box office. While this number isn’t enough to land in any all-time box office lists, it was enough to help the film turn a solid profit, thanks to its relatively modest $40 million budget.
After Antoine Fuqua and Babak Najafi directed the first two movies in the Fallen franchise, the aforementioned Ric Roman Waugh stepped in to direct Angel Has Fallen. This marked the first time Waugh and Butler worked together, but they have become frequent collaborators in the last few years. In addition to working together on both Greenland movies, Waugh also directed Butler in Kandahar, the conspiracy thriller that recently left Netflix. The film is now streaming on Prime Video and stars Clayface star Tom Rhys Harries.
When Does ‘Greenland 2’ Come Out?
Greenland 2: Migration has been set for release on January 9, 2026. The first film saw Butler and Sheriff Country’s Morena Baccarin escape a world-ending disaster. The sequel will follow their family as they leave the bunker that provided them safe haven, as they venture out to find refuge. This spot on the schedule previously belonged to Jason Statham’s Mutiny, which was delayed to the summer while the post-production team finishes work on the film. However, in its stead comes Shelter, another Jason Statham action movie that will premiere in theaters on January 30.
