Ghostbusters animated movie on Netflix features new writer

It’s been a while since it was reported that Sony Pictures Animation would collaborate with Netflix to develop an animated Ghostbusters movie, and there’s finally an update. According to Jeff Sneider, Sam Jarvis (Dollface) has been chosen to write the latest draft of the script. Previous drafts were written by Yoni Brenner (The Bad Guys 2) and Christy Hall (It Ends With Us).

What Do We Know About the Animated Ghostbusters Movie?

The project is set to be directed by Kris Pearn (The Willoughbys), but plot details remain undisclosed. Netflix is also developing an animated series based on the iconic franchise, but it’s unclear if it will connect to the animated movie.

The studio has been attempting to launch an animated Ghostbusters movie for years. Original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman first announced an animated project over a decade ago. At that time, it was rumored that the story would be told from the ghosts’ perspective. Fletcher Moules, known for those Clash of Clans animated ads, was set to direct.

After lying dormant for years, the project was revived in 2022 with Jennifer Kluska (Hotel Transylvania: Transformania) and Chris Prynoski (Big Mouth) taking over as directors. Here’s hoping this latest iteration actually takes off.

What’s Next for Ghostbusters?

The last film in the franchise, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, wasn’t a major success. It grossed $201 million worldwide against a budget of $100 million. However, director Gil Kenan has hinted that more movies are in development. “The answer is yes, Jason (and I), we take the responsibility and the joy of being the keepers of the flame of Ghostbusters very seriously,” he said. “We definitely are continuing the conversation of telling big Ghostbuster stories on the big screen. And stay tuned. There’ll be more.

It’s too early to determine what the next installment will bring, but Dan Aykroyd has stated he doesn’t believe any of the original Ghostbusters will appear. “I don’t see that coming,” he said. “I don’t see where they would need us to carry it on. They’ve got a whole new cast and whole new ideas.
