Ryan will portray the Spartan warrior who traded his soul to Ares in exchange for victory in battle, who has led the franchise across ten video games to date, via THR.
It’s a fitting casting: he also voiced Thor in God of War: Ragnarok!
The show was first announced at the end of 2022 in a two-season order, but the original creative team left in October of 2024 amid creative differences with producers. Ronald D. Moore is the new showrunner.
The series will follow the storyline of the two most recent God of War games, which introduced Kratos’ 10-year-old son, Atreus.
They will “embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human,” per THR.
God of War launched in 2005. In the original game, after ten years of endless nightmares and servitude to the gods of Olympus, Kratos is assigned with a final task, to kill Ares, the God of War.
