Frankenstein has been receiving significant attention recently, with Lisa Frankenstein and Poor Things leading the charge. This year, Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein will debut on Netflix, ensuring the legacy of this iconic monster endures. However, prior to the release of the new gothic interpretation, Universal is launching a new 4K edition of what is often considered their finest monster film.
The classic in question is The Bride of Frankenstein. This second Universal Monster Frankenstein film from 1935 is being released as a new 4K/Blu-ray/Digital combo steelbook to celebrate the film’s 90th anniversary. The cover showcases a stylized depiction of The Bride (Elsa Lanchester) screaming into the electric night. The back of the steelbook features the original Universal globe logo, while the inside artwork presents a stunning black-and-white image from the finale of Bride of Frankenstein, including Boris Karloff’s Monster, Lanchester’s Bride, Colin Clive’s Dr. Frankenstein, and Ernest Thesiger’s Dr. Pretorius. This is not the first 4K release of this sequel; Universal had previously released Bride of Frankenstein as part of their Universal Monster Vol. 2 collection and as an individual slipcover edition. This new steelbook will retail for $29.99 USD.
‘The Bride of Frankenstein’ Lives On
Although The Bride herself only appears in the sequel for five minutes, her influence on horror has been profound. Director James Whale and Lanchester established the blueprint for gothic horror for the next century. The Bride and her Frankenstein’s Monster have also been celebrated with Funko Pops, NECA action figures, and new physical media releases like this upcoming steelbook.
With a certified-fresh 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, Bride of Frankenstein is one of the best-reviewed films of all time. Alongside del Toro’s adaptation, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride will present the latest interpretation of this undead source material next year, featuring Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley in the roles of The Monster and The Bride.
Where Can You Stream ‘The Bride of Frankenstein’?
The Bride of Frankenstein is not currently available on traditional streaming platforms, but it can be rented on paid VOD services like Fandango at Home. Looking ahead, del Toro’s Frankenstein is set for release in November on Netflix, while The Bride will premiere in theaters on March 6, 2026. In the meantime, you can pre-order The Bride of Frankenstein’s 90th anniversary 4K steelbook on Gruv’s website, with a release date of September 30, 2025. This timing is perfect for horror fans’ Halloween movie marathons. It will be intriguing to see if Bride of Frankenstein is included in a Frankenstein 4K legacy collection alongside the rest of Universal’s sequels in the near future. Recently, they announced the 4K Dracula: The Complete Legacy Collection, which will be available on the same day this fall.
