Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital may be facing another series of losses.
With its long history on broadcast and its premise, Grey's Anatomy has experienced numerous deaths. In addition to the regular fatalities in the Seattle-based hospital for realism, the Shonda Rhimes-created medical series is also known for delivering the most heart-wrenching farewells for its main characters. While some have had happier send-offs, such as Christina Yang and Addison Montgomery, others met tragic ends, including Derek Shephard, Lexie Grey, George O’Malley, and Mark Sloan.
Grey’s Anatomy began the 2025-2026 TV cycle by killing another character, Dr. Monica Beltran, who died from internal bleeding following the cliffhanger explosion from season 21. This loss compelled Amelia to take a sabbatical to cope with the grief of losing her close friend and almost lover. Since then, Grey’s Anatomy season 23 has kept its ensemble safe, but this is likely to change based on the new trailer released by ABC.
In the trailer for Grey’s Anatomy season 22, episode 17 (via TVPromos), Grey Sloan confronts three near-fatal cases as Nick, Maya, and Owen fight for their lives. Meredith asks Bailey to care for Nick while Maya is rushed to the hospital after sustaining severe injuries during a call. The most intriguing case involves Owen, who is caught in a bridge collapse. The promo shows him unconscious in his vehicle as it slowly submerges in water. Watch the video below:
Given Grey’s Anatomy‘s history, predicting whether any of these near-death situations will result in a significant loss is challenging. Maya’s return is notable as it marks the first acknowledgment that Station 18 continues their work despite the spinoff’s cancellation. Nick’s predicament is also interesting due to his connection with Meredith. Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that Scott Speedman currently stars in his own ABC series, RJ Decker, which could motivate his potential exit from Grey’s Anatomy.

ABC Officially Marks The End Of An Era For Grey’s Anatomy
A game-changing update from ABC officially marks the end of an era for network TV’s legacy medical series — Shonda Rhimes’ Grey’s Anatomy.
Not to diminish the potential deaths, but arguably the most significant among the teases is Owen’s fate. As previously confirmed, Kevin McKidd is set to conclude his nearly 20-year tenure in Grey’s Anatomy. He and Kim Raver, who portrays Teddy Altman, are scheduled to exit the show at the end of the current cycle. Before the trailer was released, there were hopes that ABC might find a way to send them off with their own happily-ever-after since they recently rekindled their romance. Now, however, Owen dying seems like a real possibility.
Unfortunately, fans will have to wait longer to discover what happens in Grey’s Anatomy season 22, episode 17. The ABC series is taking another hiatus during this network TV cycle as part of its preparation for its eventual conclusion.
