The GTA Online experience is defined by our interactions with other players, and communication is often essential to successfully completing missions and heists in the multiplayer modes on offer.
Over the years, and with the various editions of GTA V that were released alongside GTA Online, things have changed significantly, and what it’s like to play can vary between chosen platforms.
Arguably one of the biggest mistakes the developer has made over the years was the removal of in-game text chat as part of the GTA V Enhanced Edition that released for the PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S/X in 2025. Now, it has emerged that it could be on the way back as part of the next generation of GTA Online experiences alongside the highly anticipated release of GTA VI.
The Future of GTA Online Has Been Confirmed
As first reported by Rockstar Intel, last week’s update to the Rockstar Games Launcher features references to the text chat, according to dataminer Tex2. They expanded on this discovery by sharing their belief that Rockstar is currently working on integrating a chat overlay into the Rockstar Games Launcher.
The idea here would be that this new innovation would allow chat overlays across all of Rockstar’s multiplayer titles, including Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA Online, and others. What exactly the implementation of the new system will be remains unclear, but it will need a way for players who aren’t friends but who are working through activities together to be able to speak to one another.
This comes after two vague patches were dropped for the PC version of the game this week, with Rockstar citing a bunch of bug fixes and quality-of-life changes. No major official news on chat from the developer yet though, so we’ll have to take it with a pinch of salt for the time being.
GTA 6 Is Getting Closer Every Day
All of that in mind, each passing day brings us just a little closer to the release of the next mainline game in the series, GTA VI. Though it won’t come with multiplayer on launch day in November, it will follow in relatively short order, and playing GTA Online will likely never be the same again.
The developer hasn’t made it clear how they plan to handle everything related to GTA VI and GTA Online at this juncture, but with progress likely resetting, there’s no reason that beloved removed features like the in-game text chat can’t return.
