In a celebration of the 10th anniversary of Hamilton, the celebrated creator and leading performer, Lin-Manuel Miranda, donned a period costume reminiscent of colonial America. He joined host Jimmy Fallon and the show’s house band to creatively reimagine the iconic songs “Alexander Hamilton” and “My Shot.” This delightful performance incorporated classroom staples such as tambourines, triangles, melodicas, and kazoos, transforming a beloved musical into a playful and educational experience for viewers of all ages.

The segment was a continuation of the highly popular Classroom Instruments series, a cherished feature of the late-night show. This series has previously showcased a diverse array of artists, including global superstars like Adele and BTS, who have participated in stripped-down yet whimsical renditions of their biggest hits, providing a fresh take on familiar songs and making them accessible to a wider audience.

Alongside the musical tribute, Miranda engaged in a thoughtful conversation with Fallon, reflecting on the profound legacy of Hamilton. He shared an exciting update regarding the theatrical release of the filmed stage production, which is officially scheduled for September 5. “In 2016, we filmed most of the original cast performing Hamilton, and it was always our intention to release it theatrically. However, the onset of the pandemic altered those plans,” he explained, highlighting the journey of the musical throughout the years.

“We made the decision to release it on streaming platforms to ensure that everyone could enjoy it from the comfort of their homes. However, on September 5, audiences will have the opportunity to experience Hamilton in movie theaters across the nation and in Puerto Rico,” he added, generating excitement among fans eagerly awaiting this theatrical experience.

Miranda also recounted a humorous and now-viral story about the time he missed a performance attended by the legendary Prince. He revealed that he was busy DJing at a friend’s wedding while the rest of the Hamilton cast celebrated with the iconic musician. “The entire cast was up all night partying with Prince… It’s the greatest FOMO of my life,” he said, sharing a laugh about the unforgettable night.

The filmed version of Hamilton originally premiered on Disney+ in July 2020, featuring a “live capture” of the stage production with the original Broadway cast. The episode of The Tonight Show also showcased a musical segment featuring Chance the Rapper, alongside a guest appearance by The Daily Show’s Jordan Klepper, highlighting the vibrant and entertaining nature of the show.
