After nearly sixteen long years without a new release, the beloved stoner duo is set to make a triumphant return in the upcoming film Harold & Kumar 4. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter (THR), the long-anticipated sequel is finally gaining momentum! The creative minds behind Netflix’s hit series Cobra Kai, including Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, have successfully secured a deal to write the screenplay for Harold & Kumar 4. Not only will Hurwitz and Schlossberg be writing, but they will also take the helm as directors for this exciting new installment.
In a joint statement, Hurwitz and Schlossberg expressed their enthusiasm, stating, “We’re fired up to bring Harold and Kumar back in a return to the unapologetically R-rated, smoke-filled chaos that started it all.” They continued, “It’s high time they puff and pass their wisdom onto a new generation. Just don’t tell their kids.” This return promises to capture the spirit and humor that fans have come to love over the years.
While Hurwitz and Schlossberg have gained recognition for their recent work on Cobra Kai, it’s important to note that their origins trace back to the Harold & Kumar franchise. They were responsible for writing the original cult classic Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, which established the characters and set the tone for the series. Their directorial debut came with the sequel Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, which they also wrote. They later reunited to craft the screenplay for A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, although directing responsibilities were handed over to Todd Strauss-Schulson.
As of now, no official contracts have been finalized, but it is highly anticipated that the original actors John Cho and Kal Penn will reprise their iconic roles. However, the involvement of Neil Patrick Harris, who was a crucial and comedic presence in the previous three films, remains uncertain. Fans are hopeful that he will return to add his unique flair to the sequel!
