Billy Joel has provided an insightful update regarding his health status following a diagnosis of a rare brain disorder that compelled him to cancel all his upcoming tour dates. This announcement has sparked considerable concern among his fans and followers, who eagerly await his return to the stage.

“I feel good,” Joel expressed during a recent episode of Bill Maher’s Club Random Podcast, which you can view below. He continued, “They keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder, so it sounds a lot worse than what I’m feeling.” This statement reflects his positive outlook despite the challenges he faces.

The legendary Piano Man revealed back in May that he had been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a medical condition characterized by an accumulation of excess cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. Medical professionals indicated that performing could aggravate his condition, resulting in complications related to hearing, vision, and balance issues.

Due to these complications, Joel had to cancel all of his scheduled concerts. “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience,” he stated at the time, expressing his gratitude for their understanding during this challenging period.

Joel elaborated on the confusion that often surrounds his condition, as well as his initial beliefs regarding its cause. He stated, “It used to be called water on the brain. Now it’s called hydrocephalus — normal pressure hydrocephalus.” He added, “They don’t really know what causes it. I thought it must be from drinking,” a habit he admitted to having in the past but has since overcome, stating, “but I used to, like a fish.”

According to the Alzheimer's Association, normal pressure hydrocephalus is often misdiagnosed as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson's disease, leading to significant diagnostic challenges. In fact, statistics reveal that less than 20 percent of individuals suffering from this condition receive the correct diagnosis.

“It’s not fixed. It’s still being worked on,” Joel told Maher, emphasizing the ongoing nature of his treatment. “I feel fine. My balance sucks. It’s like being on a boat,” he humorously remarked, illustrating the daily challenges he faces.

Currently, Joel is promoting his new HBO documentary, Billy Joel: And So It Goes. The first part of this two-part film was released on Friday, offering fans an in-depth look at his life and career.
