Henry Cavill’s Worst Film Becomes a Surprising Streaming Success

Henry Cavill has been busy planning his trip to the Highlands of Scotland, but in the meantime, one of his least-favored projects has made an unexpected comeback. Night Hunter, a 2018 thriller that critics harshly criticized upon release, is now a worldwide streaming success. On Paramount+, the film has climbed into the global Top 5, currently sitting at #4 on the charts. This is impressive for a movie that many had forgotten existed.

So what has caused its sudden surge in popularity? Part of it is timing: Cavill has maintained his visibility with projects like The Witcher, Enola Holmes, and his upcoming Highlander reboot. Fans are eager for anything associated with him, even the so-called flops. Streaming platforms often reshape a movie’s narrative, and Night Hunter exemplifies this phenomenon. Despite its poor reception, curiosity has driven viewers to elevate it in the rankings, and once it reached that top tier, even more viewers tuned in to see what the buzz was about. Now it stands alongside genuine classics on the global leaderboard.

Is ‘Night Hunter’ Any Good?

The movie, originally titled Nomis before being renamed Night Hunter, features Cavill alongside notable actors such as Ben Kingsley (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and Stanley Tucci (Conclave). The plot follows a police lieutenant, his team, and a vigilante who become embroiled in a perilous cat-and-mouse game with a serial predator. Alexandra Daddario and Nathan Fillion also star in the film; however, even with such names attached, it struggled upon release. Critics awarded it a dismal 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audience ratings were slightly better at 51%.

The film’s limited theatrical release did not help its case. It grossed approximately $1 million total, which is negligible compared to Cavill’s other work that year — Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which became the most praised installment in that franchise. For Cavill, Night Hunter became an odd footnote in a career otherwise filled with blockbusters. It was released two years before he reprised Superman in Black Adam’s post-credits scene and four years before James Gunn officially recast Clark Kent with David Corenswet. While Cavill’s future in the DC Universe remains uncertain, Gunn has left open the possibility for him to take on another role later.

Night Hunter is currently available for streaming on Paramount+.
