As reported by The Wrap, acclaimed screenwriter Hossein Amini is set to take on the task of rewriting Clayface for DC Studios. Initially, the talented Mike Flanagan crafted the first draft of the script, which laid the foundation for this exciting project. However, recent rumors have surfaced regarding a significant “page 1 rewrite” in progress. The extent to which Flanagan’s original script will be altered remains uncertain, but it is confirmed that production is scheduled to commence this October in the U.K., promising a thrilling addition to the DC cinematic universe.
Hossein Amini is widely recognized for his remarkable work in cinema, particularly for his screenplay of Drive, directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. More recently, he contributed significantly to the Obi-Wan Kenobi series by writing several compelling episodes. The upcoming Clayface film will be helmed by director James Watkins, known for his work on Speak No Evil. The project is being produced by industry veterans Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris, ensuring a high level of quality and creativity throughout the film’s development.
Earlier this year, James Gunn, the creative force behind many of the new DC projects, revealed that he initially did not plan on producing a Clayface movie within the DC Universe. However, he could not resist the allure of Flanagan’s script, which was so compelling that it sparked his interest in bringing this character to life on the big screen. “I didn’t plan on making a Clayface movie. Mike came in. He pitched this wonderful idea. I was like, ‘Damn, I can’t believe you got me to want to make a Clayface movie,’” Gunn explained. “But he’s got to write the script and who knows how that’s going to work. He goes and he writes the script. First draft is great. Second draft is even better. And then I’m like, ‘Let’s do it.’ So we found a place for it because if there’s quality stuff, we can find a way to work it in.” It may seem unconventional to bring in another writer to revise a script that was already well-received, but Flanagan is currently engaged with multiple projects, including a television adaptation of Carrie by Stephen King for Amazon MGM, as well as a new installment of the Exorcist franchise.
While the animated series Creature Commandos offered a glimpse into the evolving DC Universe, fans eagerly await a more substantial introduction to the new franchise, which will come in just a couple of months with the release of Superman. This film, crafted by James Gunn as both writer and director, features David Corenswet in the role of Clark Kent/Superman and is slated for a theatrical release on July 11th. Following this, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to premiere on June 26, 2026. As for Clayface, the studio has already announced a release date of September 11, 2026, marking an exciting addition to the growing slate of DC films.
