Hostage on Netflix: Uncovering the Coup’s Mastermind

Premiered on August 21, 2025, Hostage is the latest political drama on Netflix. The story focuses on Alex Anderson (Surrane Jones), the British Prime Minister’s husband, who gets kidnapped while working abroad. However, there are both political and personal reasons behind the kidnapping. So, who is behind the coup, and why did they do it?

Here’s a brief explanation about the people behind Alex’s kidnapping and their motives in Hostage.

Who is behind the coup on Hostage?

Hostage is a five-episode mini-series political drama starring Suranne Jones and Julie Delpy in the leading roles. It focuses on how British Prime Minister Abigail Dalton (Jones) has her life turned upside down when her husband gets kidnapped while working with Doctors Without Borders. The only demand of the kidnappers? She resigns as Prime Minister, which she refuses to do. Meanwhile, Vivienne Toussaint (Delpy), the French President, is also being blackmailed over a personal matter.

So, who kidnaps Alex?

Alex is kidnapped by mercenaries working for John Shagan, a British soldier. He’s not acting alone; he collaborates with Saskia Morgan, another ex-soldier who has infiltrated the French President’s inner circle. Together, they have aligned with General Livingston, a high-ranking British official whose aim is to overthrow Abigail’s government. However, John has a deeper and more personal reason for his actions.

Years earlier, when Abigail was a junior minister, she had to make a tough decision during a crisis in Belize, where the Guatemalan army was invading. She had to decide whether to evacuate the British personnel while they could or wait for the local allies who assisted the British forces. She chose to evacuate only the British personnel, leaving her local allies behind. This decision resulted in the death of their allies.

Among the victims was John’s fiancée, a pregnant translator. This personal loss fueled his desire for revenge and became the driving force behind the kidnapping. Although it was a lose-lose situation for Abigail, her past decision caught up with her.
