‘Iconic Teen Series: The Boys’ Star Not Rewatching Soon

Chace Crawford captured the hearts of audiences everywhere as Nate Archibald in the iconic CW series Gossip Girl. Although the original series concluded in 2012, the talented cast has continued to thrive in various television shows and films. Despite the nostalgia that often accompanies beloved series, Crawford expressed that he is not inclined to revisit the show anytime soon, hinting that a rewatch might never happen. During a conversation with PEOPLE about his fashion line, Crawford candidly shared his thoughts about the series.

Premiering in 2007, Gossip Girl chronicled the complex lives of a group of privileged students attending an elite private school situated on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Their lives were filled with entangled relationships, deceit, and a notorious blog that chronicled their every move, revealing the antics of the most popular kids in their social circle. Among these characters was Nate Archibald, whose romance with Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) faced significant challenges, especially after Nate’s brief affair with Blair’s best friend, Serena Van Der Woodsen (Blake Lively). This dramatic twist unfolds within the very first episode, and as Crawford mentioned to PEOPLE, it now feels somewhat “campy.”

“It truly was a product of its time,” Crawford reflected during the interview. “It came just before the rise of social media, and in that sense, it was a bit ahead of its time. Watching it now, it does come across as quite campy. I often forget how campy it was, but it does have a certain charm in that regard.” His reflections are based on his memories, as he admits, he hasn’t really “rewatched any of it.” Crawford further expressed, “I would be quite apprehensive. It’s a little embarrassing.”

Gossip Girl, similar to many shows of its era, thrust its youthful cast into a whirlwind of instant fame and celebrity culture. Crawford candidly shared that processing this newfound notoriety was overwhelming at the age of 22. “As a young man, you often take yourself far too seriously</strong,” he noted. “During that time, it feels as though everything is incredibly precious, and you aspire to embody the essence of someone like Marlon Brando. However, when a show achieves popularity, your sense of identity can become intricately linked not just to your character or its fame, but to the show itself.”

He elaborated on a profound observation regarding the impact of fame: “An actor once mentioned that ‘anyone who becomes famous acts like an a–hole for a couple of years in their own unique way,'” Crawford recounted. “This newfound fame can influence individuals in unexpectedly strange ways. It likely made me a bit more paranoid during that time.” Adjusting to life post-show was challenging for Crawford, who admitted to feeling confined in “pretty boy jail” after leaving the series. This context helps explain why a rewatch might not bring him comfort.

Fans can catch Crawford in every season of Gossip Girl, reliving the drama and glamour that defined the series.
