The highly anticipated The Invisible Man 2 has been a topic of conversation ever since the first film captured audiences with its thrilling narrative. However, the talented writer and director Leigh Whannell has expressed his disinterest in pursuing a sequel. His decision stems from a desire to maintain the integrity of the original story rather than simply chasing market trends.

Before taking on the project of Wolf Man, Leigh Whannell was at the helm of The Invisible Man, a film that not only captivated fans but also garnered critical acclaim. The horror thriller achieved remarkable box office success, amassing an impressive $144.5 million against a modest budget of just $7 million. With such outstanding performance and rave reviews, one would typically expect a sequel to follow. Yet, The Invisible Man 2 remains unproduced as Whannell shares his thoughts on why he?s hesitant to revisit this world.
In an interview with THR, Whannell candidly elaborated on his reluctance to craft another installment of The Invisible Man. He stated, ?I can?t imagine gluing more story onto that. Sequels are mostly driven by the economics of Hollywood. ?We scored, we did well, and let?s do it again. Let?s get them back there.? And I?ve been a front-row viewer of that.? His insight reflects a deep understanding of the industry, having previously been involved in franchises like Saw and Insidious, which have seen varying levels of artistic merit.
Whannell continued to express his satisfaction with the original film?s conclusion, stating, ?I was so happy with Invisible Man?s ending that I just don?t feel the artistic need to go forward with it. The financial need is something different. The studio might look at that and say, ?Well, we feel like it should keep going because we want to make more money.? But on an artistic level, I?m like, ?That?s a nice closed door there. Let?s just leave it closed.?? This perspective highlights a crucial point: not every successful film necessitates a sequel, particularly when the story feels complete.
While Whannell may not be eager to pursue The Invisible Man 2, acclaimed actress Elisabeth Moss is keen to reprise her role and has been actively working on developing the project. She mentioned, ?We are, I would say ? and by we, I mean Blumhouse and my production company [Love & Squalor Pictures] ? we are closer than we have ever been to cracking it,? Moss shared last year. ?And I feel very good about it. We are very much intent on continuing that story, for sure.? Her enthusiasm suggests that there may still be hope for fans eager to see the narrative evolve.
As for Wolf Man, it has not garnered the same level of acclaim as The Invisible Man. Our own critic, Chris Bumbray, noted that the film was well-acted and visually appealing but fell short in delivering genuine scares. He remarked, ?Wolf Man has one major failing ? it?s simply not scary,? adding, ?Blake?s transformation is played for pathos and drama, and even if we know there?s another wolf around there stalking the family, the attack scenes are limited and shot so darkly that a lot of the werewolf stuff is hard to make out.? You can read the rest of Bumbray?s review for more insights into the film?s reception.
What are your thoughts? Would you like to see The Invisible Man 2, or do you believe Whannell is right to keep the story as it is?
