Isabela Merced stars in Paul W.S. Anderson’s The House of the Dead

Key Takeaways

  • Film Adaptation: Paul W.S. Anderson is adapting the video game The House of the Dead into a film.
  • Production Team: The film is produced by Anderson, Jeremy Bolt, and Sega’s Toru Nakahara.
  • Star Power: Isabela Merced has been cast as the lead in this adaptation.
  • Franchise Potential: The adaptation aims to kickstart a franchise exploring the game’s lore.

A good portion of Paul W.S. Anderson’s filmmaking career has consisted of video game adaptations, with his writing and/or directing credits including Mortal Kombat (1995), Monster Hunter, and six Resident Evil movies. (He also wrote and directed Alien vs. Predator, which wasn’t a video game adaptation, but there was a video game of the concept long before the movie came along.) Next up for him is a film version of the Sega game The House of the Dead. Originally released in 1997, The House of the Dead spawned a franchise that includes several sequels and spin-offs, as well as a remake. Uwe Boll directed a film adaptation back in 2003, and that received a sequel in 2005 that was directed by Michael Hurst. Now, Anderson is plotting an adaptation that he promises will be “very, very scary” – and Deadline reports that Isabela Merced of The Last of Us and Superman has signed on to star in the film!

Behind the Scenes

In the game, players take on the role of AMS agents, a government agency tasked with thwarting the conspiracies of organizations that threaten the world. The title comes from the bureau they work for, because their life expectancies are brief.

Anderson is producing the new film adaptation with his producing partner Jeremy Bolt, Sega’s Toru Nakahara, and Story Kitchen’s Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson. Isabela Merced will be executive producing.

Statements

Anderson provided the following statement: The House of the Dead is a game I have loved for many years, and I’m beyond thrilled to be bringing this to the big screen with such an exciting talent as Isabela at its heart. We envisage this as the start of a tentpole franchise which can explore the rich world and lore that SEGA has created over a whole series of films.

Nakahara added, “Working with Isabela is a thrilling opportunity as she embodies the heroine character perfectly, bringing dynamic energy to the production. We’re dedicated to crafting a visually striking and immersive experience by introducing compelling actors and terrifying creatures that will bring the House of the Dead universe to life on the big screen. With our deep understanding of video game adaptations, we’re eager to deliver an electrifying cinematic journey for the franchise’s fans.

Story Kitchen commented, “We’re thrilled to bring together Isabela, Paul, Jeremy and SEGA, alongside our partners at Rocket Science and CAA Media Finance. It’s a powerhouse group coming together for a truly iconic property.” Rocket Science will be launching international sales at next week’s European Film Market, while CAA Media Finance represents domestic sales.
