Tyler Treese: In Orphan First Kill, Julia Stiles portrayed your mother. Did you two develop a strong bond? It?s quite significant that she chose you to lead Wish You Were Here, her first directorial effort.
Isabelle Fuhrman: I am immensely grateful for that opportunity. Our collaboration on Orphan: First Kill was remarkable, especially since we were working during the pandemic. Julia was the only person I could interact with, which turned out to be beneficial. I was a huge fan of hers and felt nervous meeting her, but she quickly dispelled my anxiety with her humility and down-to-earth nature. We genuinely connected during that time.
After filming concluded, Julia shared the script with me, expressing her desire for me to portray Charlotte, allowing the world to see a different side of me beyond my usual roles as a scary, manipulative character. I was thrilled at the prospect of showcasing my versatility in a role that reflects my true self. Working with Julia, both as an actress and a director, was an incredible gift. Her talent and understanding of this genre, which I grew up admiring in her films, made it all the more surreal. Being directed by someone I idolize in the romantic comedy genre is an unforgettable experience.
Mena, your portrayal of Adam in Wish You Were Here is truly impressive. You effectively portrayed the character?s terminal illness without letting it define him, showcasing his charismatic personality. How did you find the balance between depicting his struggles and maintaining his vibrant spirit?
Mena Massoud: This was a topic of extensive discussion with Julia. I consulted with a family friend, a neurosurgeon from Toronto, who explained the various experiences of those diagnosed with brain cancer. Initially, we considered portraying Adam with paralysis on one side of his body, as that can occur, but we ultimately decided against it. We aimed to preserve his charismatic essence. In the film, there are moments when he uses crutches or a wheelchair due to some loss of strength, which visually communicates his struggle without overshadowing his character.
We wanted to keep that balance in mind. Many young cancer patients often attempt to live their lives fully, sometimes forgetting about their illness to cherish their remaining moments. This was true for Adam as well; he is focused on enjoying his time with the incredible woman he loves, seeking joy in their relationship despite the gravity of his situation. The film captures that delicate balance of living in the moment while occasionally confronting reality.
I feel like hearing you both discuss Wish You Were Here is going to make me emotional again.
Fuhrman: It?s so easy to get emotional. Mena delivers such a heartfelt performance in this movie.
Gabby Kono-Abdy: Absolutely! Both of you bring such depth to your roles that it brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.

Gabby, your performance radiates energy, especially in your portrayal of Helen as Charlotte?s close friend. The chemistry between your character and Isabelle’s is palpable. How did you cultivate such a genuine friendship on-screen?
Kono-Abdy: Thank you! It was effortless. We had a blast together, forming a bond that was truly special. While the film centers on Adam and Charlotte?s love story, it also beautifully reflects the friendship between Gabby and Isabelle. We explored our characters with enthusiasm and creativity.
Interestingly, we had met years earlier at a pool party when I had just optioned the book. We briefly discussed our projects, and then fate intervened. Julia suggested casting Isabelle, and I was thrilled at the chance to work with someone I had a long-standing connection with. When we reunited years later, it felt as though we were meant to be part of this project together. Our characters? friendship mirrored the genuine bond we developed off-screen.
Fuhrman: I remember getting a phone call from Gabby and thinking, ?Wait, how do I know this number?? Then she reminded me of our pool party encounter, and I was stunned. It was amazing to reconnect under these circumstances, especially knowing she was involved as a producer and playing Helen.
Kono-Abdy: I laughed when Mena pointed out it was only my second day on set, while we were already so comfortable with each other. We just clicked instantly.
Isabelle, in Wish You Were Here, Charlotte initially comes off as aloof towards Adam, but their date transforms their connection. What aspects of their relationship development resonated with you? The emotions packed into their initial night together seem profound.
Fuhrman: Many people can relate to the sudden realization of a deep connection when meeting someone special. Gabby describes it well as a cosmic connection or soul tie that emerges unexpectedly. Charlotte?s initial coldness stems from her concern for her best friend, but as the night unfolds, she recognizes the goodness in Adam?s actions. Their meaningful conversations allow them to bond, leading to a sense of uncertainty about what lies ahead.
Their relationship evolves as Charlotte grapples with her feelings, understanding that their interaction was something truly remarkable. When fate brings them together again shortly after, it?s Charlotte?s choice to embrace that connection, realizing Adam?s disappearance had nothing to do with her. This narrative beautifully illustrates the power of unconditional love and the importance of cherishing those we hold dear. We never know how much time we have with our loved ones, and that message resonates deeply throughout this film.
We extend our gratitude to Wish You Were Here stars Isabelle Fuhrman, Mena Massoud, and Gabby Kono Abdy for sharing their time and insights about this remarkable film directed by Julia Stiles.
