Jamie Lee Curtis Discusses Janet Leigh’s Exorcist Audition Refusal

Why Jamie Lee Curtis Told Allison Janney to “Go F–k” Herself During Pantless Appearance

Jamie Lee Curtis almost experienced an excellent day for an exorcism.

The Freaky Friday star revealed that as a preteen she was asked to audition for the 1970s horror classic The Exorcist by producer Ray Stark, who was also a friend of her mother Janet Leigh.

“He called my mom and said, ‘Hey, I’m producing the movie of the book The Exorcist. Will you let Jamie audition for it?’” she recalled to host Drew Barrymore on a recent episode of The Drew Barrymore Show. “At the time I was probably 12 and, like, cute and kind of sassy and I had some personality and I’m sure he saw me at a party and was like, ‘Oh, she’d be funny.’”

But Janet—who shared Jamie and Kelly Curtis, 69, with ex-husband Tony Curtis—told the producer “no.”

According to Jamie, her mother—a famed actress in her own right—had a very good reason for the decision, telling Drew, “My mom really wanted me to have, thank God, a childhood.”
