Emilia Clarke’s Battle with a Life-Threatening Brain Aneurysm
Emilia Clarke, renowned for her iconic role in Game of Thrones, faced a harrowing health crisis that she bravely shared with the world. In 2019, she published a poignant essay in The New Yorker entitled “A Battle for My Life,” detailing her shocking experience with a brain aneurysm.
While working out at the gym, Emilia experienced a severe headache that escalated quickly. She vividly recounted, “I reached the toilet, sank to my knees, and proceeded to be violently, voluminously ill.” The pain she described was nothing short of excruciating—”shooting, stabbing, constricting pain.” Deep down, she sensed the gravity of her situation: her brain was damaged, and she needed urgent medical attention.
Following her distressing episode, Emilia was rushed to the hospital for a critical brain scan. The results were alarming, revealing a diagnosis of a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a serious type of stroke resulting from bleeding in the brain’s surrounding space. Emilia disclosed, “I’d had an aneurysm, an arterial rupture,” shedding light on the severity of her condition.
Emergency surgery was performed to seal the ruptured aneurysm, and Emilia described the pain as “unbearable.” As she navigated her recovery, she faced additional challenges, including aphasia, which left her “muttering nonsense.” This period was tumultuous, but she persevered, determined to regain her health.
Fortunately, a week after the surgery, Emilia reported that “the aphasia passed,” allowing her to leave the hospital a month after her admission. This recovery marked a significant milestone in her journey, but the struggle was far from over.
During a follow-up brain scan in 2013, Emilia discovered that a growth had “doubled in size,” necessitating another surgery. The fear and uncertainty were palpable as she wrote, “When they woke me, I was screaming in pain.” The initial procedure had not succeeded, leading to a massive bleed. The medical team made it clear that her survival depended on a second operation, this time requiring access through her skull in a traditional surgical manner.
Despite these formidable challenges, Emilia expressed her gratitude, stating that she is now “at a hundred per cent.” Her resilience and determination to overcome adversity have inspired countless individuals facing similar health struggles.
