Jimmy Olsen Actor Shares Funny Audition Mix-Up for Superman

Superman cast member Skyler Gisondo, who takes on the role of Jimmy Olsen, shared an entertaining story from the casting experience of the highly anticipated DC Universe film. In this new adaptation, Gisondo plays the character of Jimmy Olsen, a young and aspiring photographer working at the renowned Daily Planet alongside iconic figures Clark Kent and Lois Lane. The talented cast also includes David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Maria Gabriela de Faria, and Sara Sampaio.

During a recent interview with Omar Jimenez, Gisondo candidly discussed a humorous mix-up he experienced while auditioning for the role of Jimmy Olsen, mistakenly believing he was auditioning for Superman. He elaborated:

I skimmed the email a little bit, the original one, basically with these… When you’re auditioning for a movie like this, like a superhero movie, it’s very confidential. It’s top secret. They don’t give you a lot of information. So I got sent the email with the audition and for whatever reason, I had the idea in my head that it was for Superman and I don’t know why.

Gisondo ultimately recorded his audition tape under the impression that he was auditioning for the legendary Man of Steel. He only discovered his error when the filmmakers expressed interest in moving him forward in the audition process. Upon sharing this amusing anecdote with director James Gunn, Gisondo reported that Gunn laughed more heartily than he had ever witnessed before.

Gisondo’s experience is not only amusing but also carries an ironic twist. Interestingly, Nicholas Hoult also initially auditioned for the Superman role instead of Lex Luthor. Ultimately, both actors found themselves perfectly suited for their respective roles.

Reflecting on his experience, Gisondo remarked: “When I read the script — you’re so lucky if this happens once in your lifetime as an actor — where it just lined up in a way where James’s vision for this character and his version felt in my voice. I was cracking up reading the character because it just felt so close to home.

Although Gisondo may have felt a bit embarrassed by the mix-up initially, he seems to embrace the humor in his confusion. After all, Jimmy Olsen is a pivotal supporting character within the rich Superman narrative, and Gisondo’s connection to the character has only enhanced his portrayal. The success of Superman can be attributed to various factors, but perhaps the most significant is the impeccable casting choices, including Gisondo’s role as Jimmy Olsen.
