In a significant announcement, Fall Out Boy guitarist Joe Trohman has declared his decision to step away from the band for the remainder of 2025. This crucial step is a result of his need for surgery on his right hand, which aims to prevent any potential permanent damage to his health and performance capabilities.
On Monday, July 7, Trohman shared a heartfelt statement on social media, elaborating on his decision to take a medical leave of absence after years of managing chronic issues with his right hand, which have been increasingly concerning over time.
“Hello everyone, after enduring years of persistent challenges with my right hand, it has become increasingly evident that I require surgery to prevent any possibility of permanent damage,” he stated. “Regrettably, this means I must take the remainder of the year off from performing with the band. However, there is a positive aspect: I am on the path to a full recovery.”
Trohman reassured his devoted fans that the band’s tour schedule will proceed as planned despite his absence. “I eagerly await my recovery, so I can return to performing alongside my bandmates. I truly appreciate all the love and support during this time,” he expressed.
This recent announcement marks the second occasion in which Trohman has temporarily stepped back from Fall Out Boy in the past few years. In January 2023, he took an indefinite break to prioritize his mental health, sharing with fans: “Neil Young once said that it’s better to burn out than to fade away. However, I can unequivocally state that burning out is a harrowing experience. To prevent fading away and losing the chance to return, I am prioritizing my mental health.” Trohman made his return to the band in May 2023 after several months dedicated to recovery.
As Fall Out Boy continues to navigate their busy schedule, they have yet to announce who will take over guitar duties during Trohman’s absence. Their calendar includes performances at the Cowboys Music Festival in Calgary on July 8, the Minnesota Yacht Club festival in St. Paul on July 19, Summer Sonic in Japan on August 16-17, and three shows in Brazil later that month. The band will conclude their summer festival season at the Oceans Calling Festival in Ocean City, Maryland, on September 28.
As a founding member of Fall Out Boy since its inception in 2001, Trohman is anticipated to make a full recovery and rejoin the band on tour in 2026.
