Daryl Hannah Arrives at John’s Loft Following His First Date with Carolyn
Daryl Hannah Shows Up at John’s Loft After His First Date With Carolyn
Daryl Hannah (Dree Hemingway), who has a tumultuous relationship with John, is present at his loft when he returns home after enthusiastically discussing his feelings for Carolyn with his cousin and best friend Anthony Radziwill (Erich Bergen).
Shortly after, John takes Daryl to the wedding of his cousin Edward Kennedy Jr. in October 1993, which does not sit well with his mother Jacqueline Kennedy (this disapproval is emphasized for dramatic effect but is rooted in reality). Carolyn learns from a tabloid cover that her seemingly interested suitor has rekindled his romance with his movie star ex.
At the same time, John has been sending flowers to Carolyn and eventually confesses to her at another event that he “can’t seem to function” knowing that she dislikes him. Carolyn responds, “I don’t know you well enough to hate you.”
This unexpected meeting serves as a dramatic introduction for Love Story, showcasing the Splash star, but producers did not consult Daryl, who has been married to Neil Young since 2018.
“We want to find these characters from the inside out,” producer Nina Jacobson shared with Gold Derby, “and it’s hard to serve a bunch of agendas when you [go] to the real people. So we tend not to do that except in rare cases.”
In Daryl’s situation, she’s seen as “an adversary to what you want narratively in the story,” Jacobson noted, but “we still try to really show respect to the fact that she does have a fluency with this [celebrity] world that Carolyn doesn’t have.”
