Jose Reyes believes that the criticism directed at Juan Soto during his first year with the Mets is unjustified, explaining to TMZ Sports that a player cannot hit a home run every time at-bat!
We gathered the former New York shortstop’s insights on the Mets and their $765 million player, noting that while fans have high expectations for Soto, he remains human.
“He has around 28 home runs, hitting .250 something; people expect him to perform better,” he stated. “But for his first year, I think he is doing well.”
“If you compare his numbers with the top 20 Major League players right now, he’s among them. I believe he will finish with more than 35 home runs.”
While Reyes is satisfied with Soto’s performance, he noted that the team as a whole has struggled since the All-Star break.
We asked Reyes—who played 12 seasons with the Mets—what he thinks about the team’s ongoing fight for a Wild Card spot.
“They have been one of the worst teams in Major League Baseball with runners in scoring position,” he remarked. “That has to change. I think recently, the pitching has not been good, especially starting pitching.”
“At the beginning of the season, their starting pitching was impressive. Now, it’s not performing as well, which is a concern. This needs to be addressed quickly.”
There is still time for the team to turn things around… but October is just weeks away—the clock is ticking!
