Jougan Eye Change in Boruto Sparks Controversy Now Live

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex has made a significant impact even among readers who were skeptical after the previous Naruto sequel. Its storytelling is more robust, and its stylistic choices and visuals benefit from a dedicated blend of Mikio Ikemoto’s vision and Masashi Kishimoto’s world. However, one element from the anime, the Jougan Eye, may be fading away.

The issue would not be as pronounced if not for the Jougan Eye, an ability exclusive to the anime version of Boruto, appearing in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. Named by animator Chengxi Huang, it has ignited a fierce debate despite never appearing in the manga, where Boruto instead possesses a Byakugan Eye. With chapter #29, this Boruto discussion continues, even with the Jougan still missing.

Boruto’s Casts More Doubts on the Jougan Eye

Filler Eye Confirmed?

Fans are still eagerly awaiting the continuation of the Boruto anime, which remains the last stronghold of the Jougan or “Pure Eye”, a dojutsu unique to Boruto. The Jougan is said to have the ability to discern individuals and their chakra pathways, acting as an enhanced Byakugan. However, in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter #29, it is still referred to as a Byakugan.

This does not confirm that the Jougan is solely an anime feature or a “filler eye.” Nevertheless, this alongside the flashforward from episode #1/chapter #1 suggests that three years later, even with Momoshiki’s Kāma, he still identifies his eye as the Byakugan. With only episodes like #15, #65, and #125 providing hints, hope remains alive but unverified by Ikemoto and Kishimoto.

The Boruto Eye Debate Needs to Cool Down

The Difference Is Largely Superficial

Given that Boruto and Himawari have Hyuga lineage, it is not surprising that both would have access to the Byakugan. However, Boruto still does not seem to possess it outside of the Kāma state, even after training under Sasuke, an experienced dojutsu user.

It appears that currently, Boruto only has access to this special eye because Momoshiki is using him as a host. Until Kishimoto or Ikemoto clarify otherwise, it is exciting enough to see Naruto’s family utilizing the Byakugan or potentially a Jougan. However, endlessly speculating on its existence and misquoting interviews does not lead to any productive outcomes.

Until Kishimoto or Ikemoto say otherwise, it’s exciting enough alone to see Naruto’s family using the Byakugan or a possible Jougan.

The ongoing debate regarding “canon” status primarily exists between anime-only viewers and confused manga fans who find no written references to the eye. Despite Boruto: Two Blue Vortex showcasing some incredible abilities of its main characters, the Jougan has yet to become a point of interest. Until it is definitively addressed, this Boruto debate remains somewhat alive.
