Judge Delivers Comprehensive Instructions Before Jury Deliberations
As the eighth week of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ trial unfolded, the focus shifted to the crucial commencement of jury deliberations. Judge Arun Subramanian meticulously outlined the charges facing the defendant: eight counts of racketeering, two counts of sex trafficking, and two counts of transportation for prostitution. He instructed the jurors to select a foreperson and to notify the court both of this selection and when they reached a verdict. According to reports from CNN, Judge Subramanian also excused the five alternate jurors but emphasized the importance of remaining accessible during the deliberation process.
The instructions Judge Subramanian read the jury in Diddy’s trial this morning span 62 pages.

In a move to ensure efficient deliberations, the judge granted the jury the autonomy to determine the daily duration of their discussions, including the option to extend deliberation times beyond 5 p.m. Shortly after these instructions, jurors exited the courtroom to begin their critical deliberations. Meanwhile, Judge Subramanian expressed commendation for both legal teams, praising the “exceptional lawyering” exhibited throughout this complex case. He also permitted Diddy access to reading materials in his holding cell during the deliberation period, emphasizing the humane treatment amid such serious proceedings.
Foreperson Raises Concerns About Juror Understanding
Just ten minutes after embarking on their deliberations, the jury announced their foreperson: juror number five. However, less than an hour into the deliberation process, the foreperson communicated a pressing concern to the court, indicating that another juror was struggling to adhere to the judge’s comprehensive instructions.
“We are concerned (the juror) cannot follow your honor’s instructions,” the foreperson highlighted in a note just after 12:30 p.m. local time.
In response, the judge issued a note reminding the jury of their essential duty to engage in deliberation and their obligation to follow his legal instructions carefully. “I received your note. I remind every juror of their duty to deliberate and their obligation to follow my instructions on the law. With that instruction in mind, please continue deliberating,” he stated. This exchange came after the defense team suggested a similar note, indicating a desire to continue deliberating, with Marc Agnifilo observing, “We can always ratchet it up. We can’t ratchet it down.” Ultimately, the judge opted for language reflecting the prosecution’s perspective.
Diddy’s Family Displays Support in the Courtroom
Reports from credible sources such as the Associated Press and CNN confirmed that Diddy’s family, including his mother, Janice, and his children, were present in the courtroom on Monday. Following the judge’s announcement for jurors to exit for deliberations, the family notably stood, joined hands, and bowed their heads in a moment of solidarity. Subsequently, the family erupted into applause before leaving the courtroom shortly thereafter.

Jury Engages in Deliberations for Five Hours on the First Day
By 4:50 p.m. ET on Monday, the jury had deliberated for just over five hours. According to CNN, the jurors commenced their discussions around 11:30 a.m. Taking into consideration the latest updates, it was reported that the jury communicated with the judge via a note. Earlier that day, the judge had instructed them to send notes after appointing a foreperson and reaching a verdict. Court reporter Meghann Cuniff speculated that the note was likely a question based on the behavior observed in the courtroom. As this unfolded, court marshals escorted Diddy back into the room as his legal team gathered to review the contents of a piece of paper, as noted by Inner City Press.
Judging by the fact that they’re huddled around a piece of paper, it’s a question/issue and not a verdict.
They would act a lot different if the note said there was a verdict.

Upon retaking the bench, Judge Subramanian disclosed that he had received two letters from the jury. As anticipated, the first note posed a question regarding the distribution of controlled substances, inquiring whether the law applies when a person requests a controlled substance from another individual who then provides it to them. The second note indicated that the jury planned to conclude their deliberations for the day at 5 p.m. and would reconvene the next morning (July 1) to continue their discussions. In reaction to these notes, the judge returned the jury to the courtroom for dismissal, indicating that he would address the question during the court’s morning session. He instructed both prosecutors and defense counsel to reach an agreement on how to respond by 6 p.m. on Monday, with plans to revisit the matter in the morning if consensus was not achieved.
