Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who recently faced off against Jake Paul in the boxing ring, has now found himself behind bars. This unexpected turn of events follows his arrest by ICE due to an outstanding warrant linked to allegations of gun trafficking and potential connections to a drug cartel in Mexico, raising serious concerns about his legal standing and future.
According to officers from the Department of Homeland Security, TMZ Sports reports that the 39-year-old Chavez Jr., son of legendary boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., was taken into custody on Thursday in Studio City due to an active warrant issued in Mexico related to serious criminal offenses, including trafficking.

The warrant, according to the U.S. government, is related to Chavez Jr.’s alleged participation in organized crime activities, specifically involving the trafficking of firearms, ammunition, and explosives, illustrating the serious nature of the charges he is currently facing.
Chavez Jr. is currently undergoing processing by ICE, and officials from the Department of Homeland Security have stated that he could be swiftly deported back to Mexico as a result of these serious allegations.

“This affiliate of the Sinaloa Cartel, who has an active arrest warrant for trafficking weapons, ammunition, and explosives, was apprehended by ICE. It’s astonishing that the previous administration flagged this individual as a public safety risk but chose not to prioritize his removal from the country, allowing him to re-enter,” stated Homeland Security official Tricia McLaughlin about the arrest.
“Under President Trump, no one is above the law, including internationally recognized athletes. Our message to any associates of cartels within the United States is clear: We will find you, and you will face consequences. The era of unchecked cartel violence is over,” a strong message was conveyed by the DHS.

In addition to the legal troubles he faces in Mexico, the Department of Homeland Security points out that Chavez Jr. has a criminal record in the United States dating back to 2012, when he was arrested for driving under the influence and without a valid license, raising serious questions about his past conduct.
In January 2024, Chavez Jr. faced legal issues once again, as he was arrested and charged with the illegal possession of an assault weapon, further complicating his already tumultuous legal journey.
Chavez Jr. has shared the boxing ring with some of the most elite athletes in the sport, including Canelo Alvarez. He also faced Jake Paul in a highly publicized match just last Saturday, showcasing his skills and continuing his career despite ongoing controversies.
