K-Action Series on Netflix Dominates Letterboxd Ratings with 112M+ Hours

Weak Hero did not achieve instant popularity. When the Korean high school action series first premiered in 2022, it primarily circulated through fan recommendations, social media clips, and word of mouth instead of a significant global marketing effort. However, since the show gained traction on Netflix, its audience has rapidly expanded.

Since Weak Hero Class 2 debuted on the platform, the series has amassed over 112 million hours viewed, according to FlixPatrol, while Letterboxd users consistently rank it among Netflix’s top K-action titles. The show’s popularity stems from more than just hype; Weak Hero cultivates its following through its sharp, unsettling narrative that candidly portrays the realities of violence in environments designed to overlook it.

What Is Weak Hero About

The narrative centers around Yeon Si-eun (Park Ji-hoon), a reserved, high-achieving student who isolates himself and dedicates most of his time to studying. He appears small, fatigued, and visibly overwhelmed — making him an easy target in a school where bullying is not just occasional but relentless. Si-eun refrains from fighting back out of a desire for power. Instead, he is constantly subjected to harassment, leading him to react violently when pushed too far. He does not depend on sheer strength but rather on his quick reflexes, utilizing his surroundings and exploiting the aggressor’s focus on their immediate actions. This combination leads him to snap and act out against his attackers.

The first season of the K-drama explores how his relationships with Ahn Su-ho (Choi Hyun-wook), a skilled martial artist and loyal friend, and Oh Beom-seok (Hong Kyung), a wealthy student facing abuse at home, evolve into a beautiful yet fragile friendship that ultimately collapses due to betrayal, culminating in a violent finale with lasting repercussions.

In Season 2, Si-eun transfers to a new school but is not free from violence. His past follows him, along with an unwanted reputation. This time, the threat extends beyond individual bullies — it involves an organized student group known as The Union, which treats intimidation and extortion as business practices.

The series emphasizes the lack of support from adults. Educators address conflicts without altering the environment where students are victimized. Consequently, many educational institutions prioritize their image over student safety. Parents often lack the time or ability to be present when needed, allowing their children to remain in unsafe situations. In the absence of quality assurance for students, they will seek anything to satisfy that void, ultimately leading them into a downward spiral of consequences.

The second season escalates this issue by having The Union profit from fear, using stolen phones from students to manipulate them into debt and threaten them. This approach is neither subtle nor necessary for success. Weak Hero effectively illustrates the consequences of systemic failure when no one takes responsibility for intervention.

Why Is ‘Weak Hero’ Worth Watching Now

Park Ji-hoon portrays Si-eun with restraint. He remains quiet for extended periods, responding more than speaking and allowing tension to build rather than explicitly expressing his feelings. When he finally reacts violently, it is unsettling because it feels justified.

This technique becomes even more impactful in Season 2. However, Si-eun has grown increasingly withdrawn due to his experiences from Season 1. He continues to grapple with trauma related to Su-ho and Beom-seok, and the series compellingly argues that trauma lingers even after leaving a distressing situation.

Choi Hyun-wook plays Su-ho in the series and brings much-needed warmth to the character. Hong Kyung’s portrayal of Beom-seok stands out as one of the most disturbing performances in the show. Beom-seok’s gradual decline is particularly painful because it feels so authentic. Even after both characters are no longer present, their influence persists throughout the series’ events.

The increasing viewership numbers and buzz on Letterboxd indicate that audiences are not merely watching — they are contemplating it afterward. In a saturated streaming landscape filled with forgettable teen dramas, Weak Hero distinguishes itself by refusing to be simplistic. The reported 112 million hours viewed are not just statistics but evidence that viewers are willing to engage with something this grim when it resonates so deeply.
