Alexandra Shipp’s Insightful Advice for the Next Actor Portraying Storm in the X-Men Reboot
During an engaging interview with Collider, Alexandra Shipp emphasized the necessity for the next actor to “make it your own.” This statement underscores the significance of bringing unique individuality to the character, rather than merely attempting to replicate previous portrayals.
Shipp elaborated, stating, “People want to compare how Halle did her Storm to my Storm… I don’t think that’s fair to the actor, and I don’t think that’s fair to the audience.” She pointed out that her interpretation of Storm was characterized by a youthful, untrained essence, influenced by a street fighter persona that shaped her character’s distinctive flight and combat techniques.
When questioned about which aspects of Storm she wishes to see explored in the MCU, Shipp highlighted a compelling storyline involving Black Panther. “I would love to see Storm after her and T’Challa. I want to see that part of Storm’s backstory brought into the through line, into her story at that moment.” She remarked that no film to date has genuinely captured Storm’s powerful “African goddess” persona.
Shipp has previously voiced her dissatisfaction regarding the limited material and development she received while portraying Storm. In a 2019 interview, she remarked, “Storm barely has anything to say… we never talk. So it would be really nice if we weren’t piled into yet another jam-packed cast” (via ComicBookMovie). In 2023, she reiterated her lack of interest in reprising the role, stating, “I think there are other women who can take on that role and really kill it” (via ET Online).
The highly anticipated X-Men reboot is currently in the early stages of development, helmed by director Jake Schreier. There are rumors circulating about potential casting choices, with Ayo Edebiri and Cynthia Erivo being considered for the role of Storm. Kevin Feige has indicated that the upcoming Secret Wars narrative arc will pave the way for “a new age of mutants and of the X-Men,” sparking excitement among fans.
As of now, Marvel has yet to announce an official release date for this reboot.
