Kid Cudi has bravely disclosed that he once faced a life-threatening situation due to a drug overdose, a revelation that sheds light on his struggles.
In a heartfelt excerpt from his memoir featured in GQ, Cudi opens up about the tumultuous period he endured following his rise to fame, providing readers with a deeper understanding of his challenges.
He shares, “I began working on Man on the Moon II a few months prior to my near-fatal overdose. The influence of drugs was significant in shaping the album; they plunged me into a dark mental space. I felt as though I had demons clinging to me, and I required a soundtrack to match the moodiness I was experiencing.
“Initially, I was just doing bumps, but I swiftly escalated to consuming much larger and more consistent amounts. I would create lines as wide as my pinky and use them back-to-back throughout every single day. When I indulged, I truly indulged. I was a total maniac. This is why that second album was so filled with references to drugs; it was my coping mechanism. I honestly believe I wouldn’t have been able to complete it without something propelling me forward.”
Cudi continues, “By the time I was crafting Speedin’ Bullet 2 Heaven in 2015, I revisited that dark moment, but with a greater sense of reality. We had rented a house in Big Sur to finalize the album. After each recording session, I found myself alone, searching online for exit bags. I was contemplating how I could actually carry out my thoughts. I was plotting my end. There’s a track at the conclusion of Speedin’ Bullet where I bid farewell, and that was intended to be my final album. I had planned to end my life either at the conclusion of that album cycle or shortly before its release. I truly did not anticipate surviving that year. Not many people around me thought I would either.”
Cudi’s self-titled autobiography is scheduled for release on August 12, promising to delve further into his journey.
The talented rapper has been candid about his struggles with substance abuse, having previously disclosed that he sought treatment for cocaine addiction in 2016.
Furthermore, he has been open regarding his battles with mental health, particularly his ongoing struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts, highlighting the importance of addressing these critical issues.
